PRICE OF FLOUR

THE POSITION AT THE MOMENT.

Some inquiries were madu yesterday in order to see exactly where wo stand at tho moment as regards tho price of flour.

What will you sell a ton of flour to. day for? was asked a local merchant.

"I will sell you a ton of Canadian flour and deliver it to you to-day for £17 155., spot cash." That was definite enough, but as few bakers pay spot) cash, the price on terms was asked, and the answer was, "Oh, £18 ss. to £16 10s. ; less 25 per cent for a month." As it is pretty certain that terms are being accepted, it is easy to conclude that the price being paid the Wellington merchants by. bakers this week is over £18 per ton. ' Has our own new season's flour had no effect on the price? was asked.

"Not the slightest. The price that is being asked for New Zealand flour to-day is £17 10s. per ton, f.o.b.— practically £18 ss. per ton landed in tho bakehouse.

"I tell you what it is," said our informant. "I .have 50 tons of San Francisco flour, 120 tons of Vancouver flour, and 200 tons of Manitotan flour to arrive at the end of next month, and it i 6 costing me. £18 per ton here." Then flour will be selling hore for £20 a ton in six weeks? '

"Maybe! If the Government put the duty on it will be' even more/ They said it was to go on again on February 28, but now they have put it off'until March 31, hoping for a fall in prices. That fall will not come, and the dutjr should not be reimposed."
