"GRAFT" ALLEGATIONS
AUSTRALIAN WHEAT ACT
THE ROYAL COMMISSION

Continuing his evidence . before, the Royal Commission which is inquiring into the allegations of "graft" in connection with the Wheat Acquisition Act, Mr. Drew (the solicitor who had been acting for certain partners) said that when- Mutton (of the Farmers' and Settlers' Association) stated that other farmers in the district might wish to retain his (Drew's) services, he named . a minimum fee of £2000. His whole aim was to settle tho mattor constitutionally, and in no way to bribe members. At no time was any promise of money made to members of Parliament. If Mutton had indicated such a thing, witness would have been no party to the scheme.
Mr. W. A. Holman (Premier of New South Wales) gave evidence that he had not been approached with any suggestions of bribery either directly or indirectly. '
Messrs. Hall and Ashford (Ministers) also denied the allegations. The hearing has been adjourned sine die.
Counsel for,, the Crown safd. that he accepted; to tho fullest Mr. Drew's statement that he had had. nothing to do in any way. in connection with the statements of bribery and. corruption.
