PATRIOTIC POTATOES
TO BE AUCTIONED'TO-DAY. The first lot ot potatoes, planted by the . children;, oft the Newtown School, and grown on the Town Belt, are to be sold ])}' auction by the Chief Inspector (Mr.' James Doyle) at the school at 3 p.m. to-day; The potatoes ' are well .grown, and in excellent condition, and as. the proceeds are to go to swell .the War Distress Fund it is anticipated that there will be some lively bidding.
. .The .first lot of patriotic potatoes grown by the Island Bay Committer are to be dug to-morrow afternoon in order to.see what condition they aro in. So far it has not been decided definitely, what method will be adopted for, their disposal. A local merchant, has offered to buy the'lot and dispose of' them in the ordinary way, but another idea has been ■ suggested which it is thought might result in a better return, viz., to put the potatoes up in different sized bags—sacks, cental bags, and sugar bags—and sell them by auotion, subiect to' free delivery. After to-morrow' -it will be known exactly the size:and condition of tile potatoes, and .'arrangements will probablv br> made tor the Island Bay division of the National Reserve to dig the potatoes—as part of their training.
