THE ANNUAL CONFERENCE. (By Telegraph—Press As«oo)ati«.> Dunedin, March 11. The-annual meeting of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers opened to-day, Mr. H. W. Holmes presiding. At the' spechl general meeting to consider amendments and additions to the rules, one amendment agreed to was to extend the scope of the society by admitting engineers who were not* strictly civil engineers. Another amendment wa6: "The council may appoint committees for special purposes to report* to the council, and the members ol' such committees need not necessarily all be members ol : the society. The council may by special resolution give to any committee power to act." The proposal to,hold the annual meeting in May in future was carried.

The chairman moved the adoption of the annual'statement of accounts. Mr. l , '- i J. Williams, in seconding the motion, congratulated the society on its satisfactory position financially. They had a'large amount of money on investment. The motion was carried.

' The annual report of the council stated that the number of original members, on the register was 93, and the number of associate-member's was nine. There had been elected since the incorporation of the society 39 new members,. 26 association, arid live students, or in all 70. Two members had become life members, making a total of eight life members. The report was adopted. . Mr. Ferguson (Wellington) said that under the Bill which.'t was proposed to bring before the Prime Minister it was laid down that all local bodies should employ skilled engineers; it : was also proposed to set up a. hoard of five, the society to be' represented by two members and the Government by three. The board would have power to carry out examinations' and make regulations. He moved that the principle of the Bill be affirmed and that the matter of promoting legislation be left in the hands of the council.. The motion wob carried.
