STATEMENT BY THE ADMIRALTY
(Reo. March 9, 7 p.in.)
i . . London, March 9. The British Admiralty announces that since the beginning of the war the British have done their utmost to rescue Germans whose vessels have been sunk. Over a thousand have been saved under difficult and dangerous circumstances, although the enemy did not accord similar treatment to the British.
The Admiralty will, be unable to extend honourable treatment to' the crew of submarine ÜB, as she. has probably been guilty of sinking unarmed merchantmen. Possibly the evidence of her guilt will not be obtainable until after the war ; meanwhile the authorities will not allow the crew to minglewith other prisoners of war.
Since the blockade began, on February 18 to March 3 8634 vessels have arrived and sailed, 16 have been torpedoed, and 29 lives lost.
