On inquiry at the local office of the Union Company yesterday a reporter waa informed that fi.M.B. Rotorua was expected to arrive at Auckland.from London, via Cape Town and Hobart, on March 15. It is tho usual custom for the; direct mail steamers to come to Wellington, but on ,account of the large quantity of northern cargo on board the Eotorua she will visit Auckland first this trip. MESS-TABLE GOSSIP. Mr. J. Ruthe, late aoting-mnster of tie Koi, has joined the Regulus as mate in place of Mr. J. Boyd. Mr. T. Sawyers. has gone to Nelson to await instructions from the Anchor Line Company. Mr. E. Greenwood having joined the Opawa as engineer, Mr. A. S. Jackson has come ashore. Mr. S. Signal has joined the Queen of the South as engineer. Mr. V. Johansen', late master of the Mana, has joined the Kapuni eg mate. Mr. J. Burns, late of the latter vessel, has come ashore. Mr. W. Williams has signed on the Wahine as eitTa officer. ' Mr. A. W. Creese, lata second officer of the Tahiti, has been promoted to be chief of the Kaiapoi. POET OF WANGANUI. In his last monthly report to the Wanganui Harbour Board the engineer jtated that the dredge had been employed deepening the cut along the Heads Wharf, 100 ft. in length having been-' deepened to 26ft. at hieh wator. The two/10-ton locomotive cranes have arrived.' One of the ted-plat« 6 was so badly broken on arrival at Wellington that 'the contractors are forwarding a new one. The bed-plate of the second crane waa delivered in .Wellington with several cracks in the castings, end negotiations are now going on with a view to repairing same by the contractor. The pilot reported that 163..'vessels entered and departed to and from the port during the month; tonnage 21,850 tons, tonnage for vessels in the roadstead 21,350 tons. Two ocean-linars in the roadstead during the month transhipped 34 loads of frozen mutton and general cargo. NORTHERN CO.'S NEW STEAMER. ■ It Is reported that the steamer being buHt in Dunedin for the Northern Steamship Company will be named Waipu. The vessel is designed to carry 60 tons of cargo, with passenger accommodation for about 60 people. She will be a very complete ship, fitted with electric light, steam steering gear, steam hoisting plant, the latest type of life-saving apparatus, including Mill's patent disengaging boatlaunching gear, etc., and fine cabin arrangements. The crew's quarters will be in the bow. Trimming tanks are being provided fore and aft to reduce the draft to a minimum. When the vessel will, be completed Is hard to say. Considerable inconvenience has been caused by the war delaying some of the material, particularly piping. One part actually found its way to Samoa, to which place it was traced only after some time had elapsed.

ULIMAROA DUE THIB AFTERNOON. An expected arrival in port from Sydney between 1 and 2 p.m. to-day is the Hud-dart-Parker steamer Ulimaroa.' She will berth at the Queen's Wharf No. 1 south to land passengers and discharge cargo.

The head office of the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company have been advised that their steamer Karamea arrived at Nelson from Brisbane last night. 'She will commence loading there, and will proceed on to Waitara and other New Zealand ports for the same purpose tomorrow.

Due at Wellington from Motueka tomorrow morning the Anchor Line's steamer Kennedy is bringing 4000 cases of apples for transhipment to the. Ruahine for the Argentine. This will be the first shipment sent forward this season.

The South Taranaki. Steamship Company's Hawera was placed on the Wellington Patent Slip yesterday, for overhaul. The same company's 6teamer Mana has been laid up at Patea. for the winter. •

It is expected that the A. and A. Line's chartered steamer will have completed discharge of the local portion of her New York cargo in time to coil for Melbourne to-day.

A large shipment of dairy produce will he brought to Wellington from Onehunga and New Plymouth by the Corinna to-day. It oonsists of 24,000 boxes butter and 2600 crates of cheese. The freight will be transhipped to the Ruahine for London!

Telegraphic advice received from Greymouth yesterday stated that the Arahura had arrived at that port from Wellington, via way ports, at 11 a.m. She waa to havo left on the return journey at 1 a.m. to-day.

The Union steamer Karori will take her departure from 7 Wellington to-day for. Westport to load for Timaru and Dunedin.

Bound for Newcastle direot, the Waipori will be dispatched from Wellington, on Thursday of this week.

From Westport the Kaiapoi, which left Wellington last evening, will proceed on to Auckland. She will subseauently visit Kaipara to load for Sydney.'

Two Diesel 60 h;p. engines will be fitted into the Lyttelton-owned sohooner Eunice this week. At present the vessel- is in Auckland. She is a ship of 190 tons, and trades between Lyttelton, Havelock, and Greymouth.

Cable advice has been received by the local office of, the New Zealand Shipping Company stating that R.M.S. Remuera, bound from Wellington to London continued her journey from Rio de Janeiro on Maroh 5.
