The Department of Agriculture,: Industries, and Commerce has received the 'following cablegram from the High Commissioner for New Zealand, dated London, March 5, in regard.to the closing of'the colonial wool sales:—The wool sales.closed with a Btrong market, excited, and large businesa doing, because the 6npply fell short of the demand. The outlook is very encouraging, and present rates are lively to be maintained, The present'prices of medium and coarse erosebreds, all grades, are higher than for forty years. Messrs. Dalgety and Company, Limited, have received the following cablegram, from their London office under date March 5:—"Wool sales closed very firm. As com-, pared with last sales' closing rates greasy merinos were 10 to 15 per cent, higher, except short and wasty, which were 5 per cent, dearer. Scoured merinos were 15 to 20 per cent, higher, except short and faulty, ; which showed a rise of 10 per cent. Biflky scoured stained pieces and lock 6 were 25 per cent, higher; Greasy fine' crossbred advanced 5 to 10 per cent.; medium and coarse' 10 per cent., and scoured crossbreds 5 per cent. Slipes were par to 5 per cent. ' higher. ...
"The total-net quantity of colonial-wool available amounted'to '93,000 bales. Seles to the Home' trade amounted to 60,500 bales; sales to the Continent, 6,000 baleß; tales to America, 16,000 bales; quantity not offered, 10,700 bales; quantity withdrawn .from sale, 800 bales."

Cheese.—The. market i 6 firm at the advance, with; a, moderate demand by the trade. On account of large quantities required for the' Government spot market ie bare. Canadian, white and coloured, per cwt., 925. to :94s.;.New Zealand, white and coloured,- 90s. to'92s.; exceptionally, 935.; Australian, 86s. to 88s.; States, 84s. to 90s. Estimated Canadian cheese stocks at London, Liverpool, and Bristol on March 1 were 78,000 bozes agoinet- 95,000 at the same time last year. New Zealand and Australian. cheese stocks on March 1 <it Bondon and Bristol were 14,700 crates against 35,700 at the same time la«t year. " Hemp.—The maiket -is steady, but without animation. New Zealand' good fair grade, per ton, £31: fair, £29; fair-current Manila, £35. Forward shipment—at same prices. ' The output from' llanila for the week was 14,000 bales.
'Wheat—The market ia weak and inactive. Buyers are holding back. Canadian and American, any position, 60s. per quarter; Argentine, February to April,s9s. Oats.—The market is quiet, with a tendency in favour of buyers. Argentine, February to April, 295. per quarter.
CHEISTOHTJHQH WOOL BALE. (By Teleeraph.—PrcEp Association.)
Christchuroh, March 8. An. extra wool eale woe held in- Alexandra Hall to-day, when 900 bales- were offered to a fair attendance of buyers. Tho offerings included a few olipa, but waa mostly made up of odd lots, and eome lambß' wool crutchings and locks. There (was a good demand, local wool buyers bidding freely for scouring lots, and two Home' buyers were .the principal bidders among the oversea representatives.
The top prices were:—Merino, lljd.; lalf. bred, 14W.; Corriedale, 14Jd.; three-quarter-bred, 15d.; crosßbred. 13jd.j lambs, 135 d.; crutohings, lOd.; Corriedale pieces, 13Jd. The top price of the sale was 15d. for three-quarter-bred of "Inchbonnie" clip, the half bred wool of the same clip making 14Jd. The Inchbonnie station is on the West Coast. COAL OUTPUT. Creymouth.' March B. The week'B coal output was as follows;— Paparoa, 1610 tons 16cwt.; Elizabeth, 1610 tons 3cwt.; Liverpool, 2800 tons 3cwt.; North Brunner, 154 tons 4cwt.; Brunner, 486 tone 4cwt.; Blackball, 4769 tons 15cwt. Total, 11,421 tons 4cwt.
Customs duty collected at the port of Wellington yesterday amounted to £1134 ite.
