TIMBER FROM ■ AMERICA. .. The American four-masted schooner E. B. Jackson arrived at Lyttelton on Friday from Gray's Harbour, Puget Sound, after a trip of seventy-six days. Departure was taken from-the American port on December 19, the passage: as far as the Equator being accomplished in a fortnight. Variable winds were then experienced, causing considerable delay. Tho E." B. Jackson was within sight of Godley Head on the evening of Saturday, February il, when a southerly gale sprang up, and it was not until Friday that she was sighted by the signal' station at Adderley Head. The tug Lyttelton was sent to' her assistance, and picked her up about four miles from the entrance of the harbour, !»nd towed her into port. Sho brings a cargo of about VS.OW- feet of timber, and it is expected it will be discharged within three weeks, • ■ ! ULIMAROA FROM SYDNEY. • According to advices received by the local office, of Messrs. Huddart-Parker and Co. the Ulimaroa cleared Sydney for WelHngtott direct at noon on Saturday. The vessel,- which is due in port, early • tomorrow morning, is bringing, 135 passengers and 863 ton 6 of cargo for Wellington.

M'Ginnis, late third officer of'the Kaiapoi, has resigned from the Union Company's service. Recent Sydney files Tecord the death, on February 17, of Captain Jordan, at Laura; in the Blue Mountains, after a long and painful illness. The deceased mariner was a former officer-in the service, of the Union Company, and was well known in the coastal and Island services. At various times he . wa6' master of the Wairana, the Waipori, the Navua, and the Atua, as well as other vessels, but he resigned from the service of the company some- years ago to take" up a shore position in Sydney. The Union Company's 'steamer. Wyandotte, from Brisbane, via way ports, is due at Vancouver to-day. After taking in cargo at that .port the vessel .will proceed op to San Francisco, thence to Auckland, Melbourne, and Sydney. ■ The departure of the Chatham. Islands Steamship Company's Hijnitangi from Wellington for the Chathams, via Lyttelton, has been filed fox to-morrow. Timber will be loaded! at Greymouth this week by the Kaitangata for Melbourne and .Adelaide, " An expected arrival at Wellington from San Francisco about March 14 is the Japanese steamer Keishin Maru. She hae been chartered by the Union' Company, eind on completion of discharge here will go on to Sydney. The Government steamer Hinemoa will leave Wellington for Kajori Bock, Jackson Head, and The Brothers lights this morning. She ■ should return to-morrow, and will undergo extensive overhaul and repairs to her machinery before going north. It ia expected that tho work will take a fortnight. ■A projected departure froin. Wellington' for Picton, East Coast ports, arid Auckland to-day ia tie Union steamer Wanaka. Some time ago it was reported that the Melbourne Steamship Company hod decided to withdraw the collier Brisbane from the Australia-New Zealand trade, replacing her by the Hobart. Information has been received that the latter vessel left Newcastle on Tuesday la6t for Lyttelton with 3000 tons of coal for Lyttelton. She may be looked for on Monday night. She is a larger vessel than the Brisbane, being of 2463 tons gross register, compared with the Brisbane's 1119. Reporting to the Gisbome Harbour Board at last week's meeting, the engineoreocretary stated that the board's: dredge Maui, wntle on tho way to Auckland, had gone aground at Mercury Island (states an exchange). Some discussion ensued several members complaining that the board had not been taken into confidence whereas the general public were aware of the facts of the case on the . subject It was ultimately decided that the matter stand over until the return of the dredge
