GAMES SPOILT BY THE RAIN
GOOD SCORE BY GIBBES. Rain spoilt cricket at the Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon. The fixtures set down for play were University v. Central, and East v. North. Play started late, and at 3.30 p.m. was interrupted by heavy rain. University had two wickets down for 46 at that stage, and stumps were then drawn. In the other match the players waited for an hour, and then resumed. When the break came the score was two wickets down in East's first innings for 73, Gibbes being in with 27 to his credit. He continued playing well, and for an other hour ho knocked up the ' runs rapidly. When about 76 he started hitting out, and at 84 was caught by Hiddleston, off Southall. At 5.40 p.m. rain closed play for the day, East having three wickets down for 197. Petone scored 154 in the first innings against Old Boys,; who seoured 47 foi three wickets. \

Eilbirnie A- defeated Evans-Bay; by 28 runs on the first innings. . Evan's Bay, batting first, made 87 runs (Bradley 40, MiUer : 20). Eilbirnie: replied with 115 (H. Murphy 37, : A. ■ Kilbirnie B, playing against Post and Telegraph, were defeated by an innings and 46 runs. Kilbirnie, batting first, made 82 runs, (Stewart 31. Ward. 13, Goll 10). P. and T. replied with' 277 (Carr 69, Benson 32, Young 89, Bidmead 54, Marshall 13, Brownley 13). Kilbirnie, in their, second innings, made 149 (Cotter 27, Pyecroft 45, Russell 25, Smith 12). St. David's scored 117 in the first innings against Petone. The latter put up 13 for three wickets, of which Senior contributed 11. For St. David's, the best batsmen were.: D. Wilson 41, Thompson 15, and Ackroyd 21.
'A team representing the Independent Pioture Theatres defeated Bona Bay at Eastbourne by 33 runs. Independent Picture Theatres scored 105. (Chapman 34, Burke 27, Smith 10,' Moore 10), as against Rona Bay's 72 (Wellesley 24, Barrett 24). Burke and Chapman bowled best for 1.P.T., and Barrett and M'Kay for Rona Bay.
IN OTHER CENTRES. AUCKLAND CHAMPIONSHIP. IBi Teleer&Dh—Press Association.) • Auckland, March 7. The crioket matches were concluded yesterday in fine weather. The senior grade results wore:—Eden- A. 292, •. defeated Grafton, 62 and 137 (Cummings took five wickets for 37 runs). • Ponsonby, ; 243 (Sneddon 101, Mason 70), defeated North Shore, 170 and 118. Howden took eight wioketß for 81. Eden B, 404 (Sauverin 138, Bennett 66, Beale ol), defeated Waitemata 144. University, 330 for five wickets (Taylor 100, Graham 78, Airey 62), defeated Parnell 251. With one match to play, Ponsonby is }eading by one point from Eden A, while the next team on the list, North Shore, is nine points behind Ponsonby: Eden A and Ponsonby are drawn to play in the next round, and the winner will be the champion team for the 1914-15 season.
CANTERBURY FINALS. Christchurch, March 6. The cricket final for the championship commenced to-day. Scores:— . Linwood, 123 (R. Read 67), v. Sydenham A, 113 for six wickets (W. Hayes 52. F.. Woods 28). Other senior matches:—West Christchurch, 62 (played six men), v. St. Albans, 145 (H. A. Bishop 62). East Christchurch, 347 for seven wickets (T. Carlton 214 not out, J. Martin 71, J. M. M'Lelland 71), v. Sydenham B. Kaiapo.i, 149, v. Riccarton, 93 for two wickets (E. R. Caygill 57 not out). Mr. C. S. Boxshall, who has represented Canterbury for many roar-., and also New Zealand, as wicket-keeper, definitely announces his retirement from the game. DUNEDIN MATCHES POSTPONED. Dunedln, March 6. Heavy rain set in about midday, and all the cricket matches were postponed.
