AMATEUR ATHLETICS

NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. [BT Meecukt.3 Next Saturday on the Basin Reserve the big event of the amateur athletic season is scheduled to take place. This is the New Zealand amateur atbletio championship meeting, when the chosen of the athletes of tne Dominion provinces will foregather to decide the individual premierships in the various'departments of the sport, and also the allocation of the championship shield; at present 'held by the Wellington Centre, for the present/ season.' So far this season athletio contests in the city have been confined to evening meetings, so Saturday's gathering should be welcomed by the public as a revival of the sport as'an afternoon entertainmenii, and it should make an additional 'appeal to public support from the faot that' the proceeds are to be devoted to a most deserving cause, 'The profits are to* be handed' over by the Amateur''Athletic Association to form a nucleus for'the Wounded New Zealand Soldiers' and Dependents' Fund. . Apart; from . this. ,she':;nature of the sport promised by the entries received should ensure the success of the meeting. Notwithstanding, the faot that so many of our prominent athletes, are absent in the servioe of their Eing and country, there are sufficient of the . old brigade left to combine with the riiore; recently "arrived" of the Dominion's athletic talent to make an attractive display, and performances of no mean merit may be. confidently looked for. So far the teams entered from the centres outside Wellington consist of Canterbury (eight men), Southland (seven men), and Auckland (three men). Otago's entry had not come to hand at time of writing, but as . the southern centre has published a selected team of sixteen ■men, it may fairly be assumed that its representation -will be a strong, one. Naturally upon its own ground the Wellington team, which, was published on Saturday, is looked to to retain the coveted shield that carries with it the title of the champion athletic province, and the performances of the selected men at the provincial championship meeting at Masterton last Thursday, certainly strengthen the. conviction that although the. sport has not figured largely in the public eye of late it has suffered no deterioration in standard., The programme consists of sixteen New Zealand championship events, several handicap'events, a boy scout race, and! two events for members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, and the-first event is timed for 2.15 p.m.

UNIVERSITY ATHLETIC CLUB Tho annual general, meeting of the University Amateur Athletic Club was held on Friday evening last at Victoria University College. The club captain reviewed the position, and stated that during the previous season the membership of the club was over fifty, but of this number many were now with the Expeditionary Forces. Included among those accepted for service was A. Hudson, the New Zealand champion .for the three miles and the holder of two University records. Despite the extensive depletion it was the determination of (the. club to carry on "as usual," and by encouraging thorough training to make every member physically efficiont for any eventuality. The finances of the club were satisfactory. The following officers were elected for the ensuing year President, Professor Adamson; vice-presidents. Professors Brown, Eastorfield, and Hunter, Drs.
