ANNUAL MEETING. ' (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Tlmaru, March 4. The annual _ meeting of, the United Press Association was neld to-day, those present being:—Mr. G. Fenwick ingThe annual report dwelt upon the increased • expenditure necessitated by the great increase in cable news on account of the war, and stated that' during the year '735,439 words of original cable news had been supplied from all sources, which is far in advance of any previous ■ record. _ Two of the features of the cable business were the cutting of the Pacific cable, which was out of commission for eight weeks, and the burning of the cable office at Waka,' which interrupted communication by that'route for a short time. ■ Reference was made to the proposed appointment of official war correspondent on the lines which have already been published. The number of subscribing newspapers was rated at 72, and of shareholders at 45. - . . ;

The chairman delivered an interesting address 'dealing at length with the operations of the association during the year, one of the features of which was Bis reference to the fact that the first meeting from which the association ultimately sprang was held in 1879 at Timaru, the place at whicK they were assembled ' that day. Newspapers Proprietors' Association of New Zealand was continued at 9.30 _ this morning, Mr. P. Selig, president, in the chair. The question of additional cable communication .with the North Island was brought forward by the president. After discussion it was unanimously decided that the president make representaions to the Government in the .matter. It was resolved that the association act in sympathy with the Federation of Master Printers with respect_ to any applications to the Arbitration Court. Mr. Pirani was appointed to act as the association's representative. A letter from Lieutenant-Colonel Gibbon. Chief of the Headquarters Staff, referring to the War Office's latest regulations respecting tho publication of references to the Expeditionary Forces after they leave New Zealand was read and discussed. It was left j to the president to reply. Amongst] other matters dealt with were the selling of advertising space for manufactures of the enemy countries, the freight on news printing paper, and claims for damage _to paper. The thanks of the association were accorded to the municipality for placing the" Council Chambers at the disposal of the association for meetings, and it was unanimously resolved that a cheque for £25 be forwarded to the Mayor of Timaru as a donation to the Fund for tho Relief of Belgium.

Mr. P. Selig was unanimously reelected president. Other officers elected were: —Vice-president, Mr. P. E. Hyman; committee, Messrs. E. Blundell, Geo. Fenwick, F. Pirani, E. 'Abbey Jones, H. Horton; awards committee, the President and Messrs. R. B. Bell, H. Horton, P. E. Hyman, P. Pirani, and "W. C. Weston.; hon. auditor, Mr. E. .6. Kerr; secretary and treasurer, Mr. L. J. Berry.
