DECISION FIGHTING ON W 11 I®MED GERMAN POWDER MAGAZINE - BLOWN UP ' EFFECTIVE RUSSIAN OFFENSIVE i HEAVY AUSTRIAN LOSSES The determination of the Allies to force the passage of the Dardanelles is now the outstanding feature of the war news, and tp-day further successes .a're to be recorded. The inner forts have again cp,me in for a rain of shells, but a report on the results has not reached the Admiralty. In the neighbourhood of the Dardanelles, Jlritish cruisers have destroyed an observatory station, and have done other damage. Altogether, forty Turkish guns have been put out of action. The success of the Allies 111 these operations is not doubted, and even Gorman and Austrian newspapers are agreed that it is only; a matter of time before Constantinople is'ih tho hands of the 'Allies. Italy is reported to be approaching a momentous' decision, and apparently the attack on the Dardanelles has had somo influence on the Italian attitude. On tho Belgian-French frontier tho position is very satisfactory. On tho Belgian sand dunes the enemy suffered from artillery fire, and the Allies captured another trench. Progress has been made in the Champagne district. The Russians, who took the offensive recently, done roma rkably well. On the East Prussian frontier the Germans are being steadily driven back, and there ; are. records of severe hand-to-hand fighting. In tlie Carpathians and in Galici& the Austrians continue to make abortive day and night . attacks, and have suffered severe losses. The food situation in Austria is said to be alarming, and a Hungarian General is credited with the statement that Austria-Hungary cannot carry on hostilities beyond May, because of the shortage of cereals and war materials.
