OILTANKER ABLAZE
TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE AT SEA. By Telegraph—Preos Association— OoDyrigit (Rec. March 6, 0.35 a.m.) London, March 5. The Norwegian oiltanker Lahabra, 10,000 tons, with a cargo of benzine, has reached the Tyne. She was ablaze amidships for two days in mid-Atlantic, owing to a short circuit firing two tanks. One half of the crew was unable to communicate with the rest. While the vessel was being battered by a terrific gale, a violent explosion blew up the decks, the flames reaching the masthead. The benzine was swept into the sea, which was aflame. The lifeboats were blown to pieces. The waves finally put out the fire. The charts, compasses, and sextants had gone when tho Lahabra reached the Azores. Six of the crew were drowned.
