A PRAISEWORTHY MOVEMENT.
So far Wellington has lagged behind the other centres of the dominion in the setting up of a fund for the purpose of making provision for the maintenance of our soldiers disabled in the war and those dependent upon them. This reproach is shortly to be removed from the City, and a fund for this very deserving object will shortly be brought into being. The iucleus thereof is being provided by the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Society, which body proposes to donate the net proceeds of its championship athletic meeting in the Basin Reserve next Saturday to this purpose.' The proposition has the sanction and co-operation of his Worship the Mayor and his' Patriotic Committee, and the City Council is assisting by granting the association the use of the Basin Reserve for the occasion free of charge. Other sports bodies are co-operating keenly in the project. The Cricket Association has postponed all its matches for that date, while the Wellington Regatta Association, which'- had ■ its annal regatta arranged for the same-day, has decided to postpone its fixture for a week, so that the fund may not suffer through the clash of dates. _ , It iB to be hoped that the public will deal with the project in the same sympathetic and sporting spirit, so that the Athletic Association's enterprise may result in the fund—to be officially known as the Wounded New Zealand Soldiers' and Dependents' Fund—receiving a substantial inauguration.
