HUTT RIVER BOARD.
!At tie monthly meeting: of the Hutt River Board hold last evening there were present: Mr. Baldwin (chairman); and Messrs. Knight-and Bowers. In reply" to an appeal from the British and Belgian Fund it was agreed, to donate the sum of 10 guineas.':. . The overseer reported that all snags had been removed from near Andrews's, and the filling of the bank protection.' had been completed. In respect to the extending of the length of-beaches in the upper district the report recommended that Turner's boundary should he included as a beach to be leased by, public tender. The- City' Council had not made,, any attempt to remove certain piles from the river, and it was learned that they had no intention of doing so. The chairman's annual report stated that the protectiyo works_ of the river from the. Silverstream Bridge to Mason's Gardens were inspected in January. Apportion of the willow work had washed away near the SilverstreamBridge, but ,repairs had been effected. Two groynes would require erecting at this place, otherwise tho money, spent would be thrown away, .Another .groyne is urgently needed to protect the Hayward Co.'s property lower down. At Calcinai's, it was found that whilst tho main portion of the willow groyno erected by the . board had not stood the strain of the heavy flood, apportion of the groyne was still standing. It was reoonfmended that the lower boom groyne be extended two lengths. An inspection was made on January. 13 of the works from Mason's Gardens to the Hufct Bridge. At the golf grounds it was noticed, that the river had a tendency "to cut into the eastern side and three groynes were wanted urgently. At Pitcaithly's, it was found that the river was working to the westward, and if. the present work now being carried out by Pitcaithly's was not 'successful in-turning the , river.. the Railway Department should bo . asked to assist in tho erection of ahethef groyne. It was recommended that the board should' try. and. get the railway line running into Kiugdon's beach re-, moved further to the westward, as at present it throws .the river to the eaet and prevents s-raigMening at this point, which is cf vital' importance:
