NOTES AND COMMENTS
rßi Glbhcob.l Acceptances for th© Opunake Meeting close to-morrow night. _ ■ Emperador's victory in the Jackson Stakes last Saturday brings his total winnings to 1340 sovs. • At a meeting of the Licensing Committee of the Wellington . Racing Club, held this week, W. H. M'Kay was granted a jockey's lioense for a further three months, but the application of R. Hatch, who baa just finished a twelve-months' term of disqualification, was held over. . Several horses whioli are to compete at the Nelson Meeting next week are being shipped to-morrow. Amongst tho number are Rerehau, in charge of H. Telford; Mount Victoria and Ronmauia, in charge of C. Pritch.ird; and the Porirua team, Gold Soult and Goldstream. .. Good acceptances have beto received for the Akaroa Meeting, which takes place to-morrow. Amongst the runners in tho Oup is Nightwatch, 9st. slb. Sir G«o. Clifford's horse has been off the sccne for some considerable time. Chrysotis, 7st. 31b., having such a big pull m the weights, may be able to hold the opposition safe. In the Hurdles White Cockade, who has beon off the scene for nearly two years, will be a runner, as will Daylight Bill, who haa not raced since the winter.
Daytime, ivfco was purchased out of the Selling Plate at Trentham in January, will make his first appearance in Mr. A. Rutherford, junr.'s, colours in the Forsyth Flying, five furlongs. The distance will suit the Karamu-bred filly. Prior to. the Dannevirke Meeting, Merry Guy ha<l done very little work at Trentham, so considering this it oame as no surprise to find him defeated by Ascalon on Doth days. When next the pair meet, the positions may be reversed. Traquette, winner of the C. M. Lloyd Stakes at Flemingtori yesterday, is by the defunct Traquair, who left several smart sprinters, including Ventura. Traquetto was in a class by berself as a two-year-old, and she was as far ahead of Carlita as .the latter was of the remaining youngsters. Her sire "was once under offer to a leading breeder in the Dominion, but his final choice rested on another horse. Onazen, who ohanged hands at Flemington this week, for 1200 guineas—the buyer being Mt. Si Hordern—was one of E. A. Connolly's numerous team. He has had a great reputation as a galloper, but las failed to run up to it in public.. Horses that Connolly allows to pass out' of his stables do not win out of their turn' for other owners. Sir George Clifford's Nightwatoh is being treated nith a shampoo and massage after work at Riccarton to see if it will reduce the stiffness he .suffers from. At the finish he is cooled out under a sheet, as. trotters are.
At the Kempton Park Meeting, England, a few weeks ago, a horse named ■ Black Plum broke down badly while running in a selling steeplechase, but his rider, T.Gowland, instead of pulling him up at onoe, persevered with him nntil the poor brute could go no 'further. The stewards summoned the jockey before them, and, considering that he had been guilty of "j*ross cruelty"—to employ the official wording of the sentence—suspended him from riding for the rest of the day and fined him £20. Black Plum lb ad. to. be destroyed after the race. With the first day's winner out of the way, Sunbird, rnnner-np in the Dannevirke Cup, had no difficulty in sooring yesterday. The localiy-orajcd Rongora. and.Admiral Beatty monopolised the attentions of backers in the Hack Scurry, and.the former won. Suratura, for whom a win is long overdue, credited her owner with the Mangatera , Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, aiid. was allowed to pay a false price. A rank outsider in Discussion was placed second.
FIXTURES. March 10 and 11—Nelson J.C. Annual. March 12 and 13—Napier Park B.C. Antumn. March 17—Opunaie R.C. Annnal. March 18 and 19—Masterton B.C. Autumn March 24 and 25—Bangitikei R.C. Annual.
