WAIRARAPA MEETING
A TANTALISING MIRAGE
(By TclegTaph.—Special Beporter.) Masterton, March 3. ■ Tba Wairarapa Rifle Association's annual meeting was continued on the Papawai Tango this morning. The weather, in marked contrast to the oold and wind of tho opening day, was fine and hot, with little wind blowing, but the conditions were not conducive to the best shooting, for a mirage danced tantalisiugly across I the targets and played havoc with many of the soores. It was a puzzling day for riflemen, for what wind there was came in little puffs and eddies, and once a whirlwind went right, across the rango. The calculations of the best marksmen were upset on' many ocoa&ions when the mirage ca.me in from the right, while the indication flags .fluttered lazily from the left. As a general rule the mirage gave tho true indication of tho air currents. Just before lunch the glare was very pronounced, but when tho men went down for the Wellington Match at 600 yards at 2 o'clock the light was painful in.the extreme.. As showing how even the test shots broke up, George Hyde, wtoo can be looked upon to he well up m the prize-list, only put up 33 for his ten shots. He was one of the first men down and struck the mirage at its worst. Shooting opened,in the morning mtn the Nelson Matohi, 7 shots at 300 and 800 yards. Not'a possible was scored at either range, whereas yesterday, with a very high wind prevailing, but a good light, no fewer than five possibles were recorded at 600 yards. C. Barkle, Suburbs, who won the match, with a total of 67, made 34 at the longer range. His first sooririg shot was a four and he finished with half a dozen tmVlfi. J. Burns, Karori, was the only other man with 31' at 600 yards, and he had hard luck in not getting-a possible. His sighter was only an outer, but he struck the bull'6-eye for his first scoring shot and, stayed there till the last shot, when he dropped to four. He only got 31 atj the first range,' this" put him ionrthi in the prize-list.' After lunch the Wellington Match, ten shots at 600 yards, commenced, carrying with it Messrs. Lever Bros.'' Challenge Cop. Towards the olose the light got berfter and the shooting improved.. Lieutenant B. H. Irvine, Waimea, with 48, was the winner, and this score put "him well up in the championship aggregate, and E. J. Sing also soorcd 48 taking the second prize, and then came Rifleman Monks, Eangitikei, 47, followed by three with 4S.
/The last match fired to-day was the Canterbury Match, ten shots at 500 yards,, figure targets. The light was much better, and a steady right wind. had sprung up. H. Williams, Ohura, was the winner, with the only possible of the day. The long-distance ranges will be fired to-morrow. The midfield aggregate for all matches fired, which carries with it the Buchanan Challenge Cnp, was concluded to-dayyand I while the prize list has not , yet been made up, the following are in the leadling positions, with a possibility of slight j alteration:—W.
