LOVERS' QUARREL
SENSATIONAL SHOOTING AFFAIR. (By Telegraph.—Pre63 Association.) Napier, March 3. Owing to both the victims (Alice Parkinson and Bert West) of the shooting sensation in Nelson Crescent being in a serious condition and unable to make statements, details of the incidents loading up to the affair are very meagre. West and Parkinson had been on-in-timate terms for some. time. Tho girl had obtained a marriage license from the Registrar, but the parties had not been -married. When Parkinson met West with a man named Ford they had an altercation. Ford tried to intervene, but -without effect, and West and Parkinson left him and entered a clump of willows near by. Shortly afterwards shots were heard. Parkinson was operated on during the night, but the bullet was not extracted. Her condition is improving. West's condition is still extremely critical, and he is unconscious.
Later. This evening ..there. was' a slight improvement in the condition of West aiid the woman Parkinson. ' ■ , i ============== ' RAILWAY SMASH $ — MOTOR CYCLIST'S NARROW ESCAPE. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) inveroarglH, March 3.. A serious railway smash occurred at Wallaoetown crossing this morning. A goods train from Nightcaps struck a motor cyclist, who, with his machine, was thrown on' the cow-catcher. The cycle struck the pointsman, who was sit. ting on a lever, and knocked him down. The engine left 'the rails, followed by seven coal and grain-laden wagons, which tore up the permanent way for a chain and a half. The engine was badly damaged, and several wagons were capsized and smashed. The driver, fireman, and cyclist escaped uninjured. The line will be blocked, till late in the afternoon. ■'
