BIG BLAZE AT EPSOM. . (By Telegraph.—Press. Association.) Auakland, March 1. A fire this morning destroyed a block of seven shops in the Manukau Road, Epsom. The shops were occupied by Sand and Eslick (drapers), E. J. Ivory (tobaooonist and fancy goods), Miss Cos (fruiterer). W. J. Uunciman (bootmaker), F, Lee (ironmonger), J. Griff en (fishmonger), F. Jones (fruit* erer). Four of the shops ware new, owned by Misses Davidson, of Ilemuera, Sand and Eslick. owned the promises they occupied, Mr. Vlncent owned the shop occupied by Ivory,- and the Adams Trustees the shop occupied by 'Miss The properties occupied by J. F. Quale (bootmaker), and Coppins (supply stores) weire partly damaged. , The total loss is about £10,000. The fire started in Ivory's shop. When the two suburban brigades arrived the whole block was well alight. The flames spread across. the _ street to the Epsom tramway; barn, which caught fire in several places, but was not badly damaged, though the overhead tram lines and' telephone lines were burned. The electrio current was cut off for some time. . The insurances are Lee, £200 m the South British Office; Ivory, £600 on the stock, in the Victoria Office ; Ivory's shop, £600 in the Liverpool, London, 'and Globe. The'four shops owned by the Misses Davidson were insured for £1500 in the .State Office. Mrs. Eslick also had £400 on her property in the Stat© Office.
: HOTEL DESTROYED. Creymouth, Marci 1. ' The Empire Hotel at Moana was destroyed by fire yesterday. Practically all the residents of the township were absent at the time at a pionic across the lake. The hotel is a total loss. The fire is believed to have originated in one of the back rooms. The buildin" insured in the Phoenix Office for £800. .' " ; HALL GUTTED AT PALMERSTON. Palmerston N., March 1. A fire on Saturday gutted the Loyal Orange Hall. Everything inside was destroyed. ' , . A five-roomed residence at Kelvin Grove, occupied by B. Jones and owned by H. Jones, was also destroyed. The placing of an electric-iron on a shelf and neglecting'to turn the. current oft was responsible for an outbreak of fire in a,five-roomed cottage in Pitt Street, Wadestown, yesterday afternoon. The iron became red hot, and ignited "the shelf, causing some little damage to the kitchen before the outbreak was extinguished., The house which is owned and occupied by Mr. Wm. Sloan, builder is insured in the London and Lancashire Office for £400, and the contents in the same office for £20°. / ■■ ' COUNTRY COTTAGE DESTROYED. Our ' Masterton correspondent telegraphed last night:—A sis-roomed house in West Taratahi, owned and occupied by W. Compton, was destroyed by fire at an early hour this morning. ■ The occupants escaped m their night-clothefl. , . , The insurances, if any> sre not yot available.
