WORKING MEN'S CLUB

AKOTAL -PICNIC. [Day's Bay was the locality .selected for the annual picnic of the Wellington Working Men's Club and Literary Institute which took place on-Saturday., The weather remained fine throughout the day, despite, lowering rain clouds over the oush-clad hills, and ■ each ferry, steamer from the City brought a goodly contingent of picnickers, so that by mid-afternoon there must hare been ah attendance of close'upon, 1500! Among those present. were His Worship the Mayor (Mr.'J. I'. Luke)/ In the morning the picnickers devoted themselves to cricket and other pastimes; the main feature of the afternoon was the carrying out of a varied sports programme.At the official luncheon to the visitors, Mr. Percy Wood (vice-president) presided, and in addition to the toasts of "The King" the toasts of ''Parliament" and "Tho Mayor and Councillors" were also honoured.. The General Committee for the day's cuting was composed of Messrs. J. Andrews (chairman),- T. Warren, 1). M'Phee, W. Perry, J. H. Rogers, W. J. Smith,'F. Meyer," W. Payne, and IS. Osborne. Mr. W. J. Smith worked hard as picnic secretary, and the various sports officials were: Uandicapper, Mr. J. D. M'Phee; starters, Messrs. D. M'Phee and H. Guppy; referees, Messrs. F.' Meyer and H. Rosenburg; clerk of course, Mr. C. Hayes; bellman, Mr. P. Leggett; juclges, Messrs. T. Cole and C. Ryder. A programme of juvenile" sports, ' ill ..which the contestants were, very numerous, was excellently supervised by Messrs. B. Nye, T. Warren, andJ. H. Rogers. Mr. W. Noot capably fulfilled the duties of record clerk and 1 Press steward. A record of an. altogether successful gathering would be incomplete without complimentary reference to the efforts of Mr. Percy Wood (vicepresident), who, as charge d'affaires, was übiquitous, in seeing to the smooth running of the many details concomitant with a large picnio, The Waterside Workers' Band discoursed, a programme of .popular musio.. during the day. Acknowledgment is made of donations of -prizes by Miss Wynne, Messrs. Bird > and Jansen, J. Domb, P. Le Seur, A. Andrews, G. 'Frcst, F. Meyer, Cohen, Mapplebeck, Warren, Pointon, S. Brown, and Poole, M'llwraith and Co., the City Printing Company, and- The Dominion,, the "New Zealand Times,"' and the- "Evening Post." ' . :
