' NEW OOASTAL STEAMER. . Messrs. John M'Grcgor and Co. have' liiade good • progress in Uie construction of the new coastal steamer now being built at the Otago Foundry to, the order of the Northern Steamship Company. The whole of her frames and hull plating have been ■feet up in the foundry yard, and wil> shortly be dismantled for the purpose of being rc-erected on the. slip by the foreshore. The new vessel has shapely lines, and is being built to suit the passenger and cargo trade on the northern coast of Auckland, her dimensions being.: Length, 101 ft., I beam 22ft., depth 7ft. 6in. moulded. She will bo driven by twin screws and triple expansion engines, the diameter of the cylinders being 73 inches, 113 inches, and 19 inches respectively, with a stroke of 9 inches.. Steam will be supplied by d locomotive typo boiler .working at 1901b. pressure... BAD WEATHER ON WEST COAST. Beports received from Westport and Greymouth on Saturday stated that tho weather had been extremely bad at thoee parts, and all shipping had been hung up. Conditions had improved yesterday. PROM SYDNEY DIRECT. The Union Company's local office has been advised that the Manuka left Sydney for Wellington direct at 3 p.m. on Friday She has 113 saloon and 102 steerage passengers and 584 tone of cargo far Wellington. Port should bo made to-morrow morning. MAITAI AT SAN FRANCISCO. Advice has been received stating tha,t the Maitai, which cleared Wellington for Sa.n Francisco on February 4, arrived at her destination on Friday last. She is spheduied to leave thero on the return trip on Wednesday, March 3. • TAINDI FROM LONDON. . Shortly after noon on Saturday the Bhaw-SavilJ liner Tainui arrived from London, and after inspection berthed at tho King 6 Wharf. Tho Tainui left London on January 10—two days late—end proceeded to Tcncriflo, which port was reached on Januaxy 16. Vine wather was experienced from the latter port to Cape Town, tho South African port being made on January 31. The journey was resumed on February 2. Good weather was met with when tho Tainui was running down the Basting down, and arrival wa*- made .at Hohart tin tho afternoon of February 21. Here 700 tons of general cargo was landed, and departure taken for Wellington at 6 a in. on February 22. Oaptain Olaydcn is still in command, and hf.s the following officers with him:—Chief, Mr. W. SI littery, late wireless operator on the Moeraki, has joined the Wa,nine in a similar capacity. „ , Mr. Adolf Wahlstrom. a. well-known Kelgod identity, died recently, aged 73 years. He arrived from Sweden 53 years a-go in the barque Wilhelmina from London, and settled at Nelson, where he plied his trade as a shipwright and built tho steamer Waitapu, the ketch Oamellia, and other small craft. Captain Wahlstrom, of tho steamer Putiki. is a son of deceased. Pilot Max-.veLl, of the Otago Harbour Boards' staff, has gone to Sydney on holiday leave.

Considerable structural alterations have been necessitated ir. the Mokoia's boiler spaco in order to make room for the new Eabcock and Wilcox' boiler with which she is being equipped, consequently her stay at Port Chalmers has been a fairly lengthy one. Tho work has now reached a, stage when her reappearance on schedule running'may be announced, and she will re.sumo running on March 17, when site will leave for Lyttelton ill order to take up the Moeraki's intercolonial running. Tho Mokoia will therefore leave Lyttelton 011 March 18 for Wellington, Sydney, and Hohart, and the Moeralii will bo withdrawn for overhaul.—"Otago Daily Times." The mail steamer Niagara, which left Vancouver for Auckland on February 17, ia bringing 163 passengers, while her carpo for Now Zealand amounts to 570 tons. Sho ia duo at Auckland on March 7.
