AWARD INTERPRETED
An interpretation of- the award relating to the hotels in. the Hawkes Bav district has been filed with Mr. lx. S. Clark (Clerk of Awards) by the Arbitration Court. The Inspector of Awards at' Napier applied for an interpretation of Clause \ (a) of the Wdlington District Hotel, Club, and Restaurant AVorkers' award. Ine clause reads: "The working hours shall be worked within six days only in each week. One full day's -holiday of twenty-four hours on any day in each week shall be allowed to each worker in every hotel.". .The 'question was: Is the award binding on every hotel worker in the award, irrespective of the number of assistants employed m the hotel?" To this the Court gave the following answer : "The award is binding on every hotelkeeper mentioned in the award, irrespective of the number of assistants employed in the hotel. The suggestion that, by reason of Section S of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1913, the award only applies to those kotelkeepers who employ more than fivo assistants in addition to the occupier and members of bis or her family, is quite untenable, (See memorandum .to the Wellington Hotel ■Workers' Award, vol. XV, page 239.)
