MAGISTRATE'S COURT

A SERIOUS CHARGE J ALLEGED INCENDIARISM Mr. D.G.A, Cooper, S.M., heard the polico cases at the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Charles Edmunds and Walter Balch were charged with' wilfully setting lire to the White Horse , Hotel at Ngahauranga oil July 19 of laet year. ChiefDi'tpctire Boddam asked for. a remand to Wednesday next. On tlie accused Ealcli's belialf Mr. H. F. O'Leary applied for baiJ. . Chief-Detective Boddam pointed out the seriou6 nature of oho charge, and suggested that bail should be substantial. The Magistrate granted the remand, and fixed bail at £200> with two sureties of £100. ■■

ALLEGED BOBBERIES FROM | ' HOTELS. Arthur- Charles William Pearce appeared on remand charged with the theft of property from rooms at hotels. The first charge against him was the theft of jewellery and money of a total value of £9 155., the property of Daisy Amy Lazelle from the Empire Hotel; (2) the theft of an overcoat the -property of Edward William Dooley, and a razor the' property of A. H. 'Iruda, and 6s. in money, the property of Nora Davin, from another hotel; (3) the theft of £3, the property of Maud Homer, fiom the dwelling-house of J. C. Mason. In respect to the two' first charges the evidence of Detective Carney was to the effefct that accused was arrested as he left the Maori at Lyttelton. Eventualiy accused had confessed to tlio theft of the jewellery. At the police station other of the stolen articles were found on . him. After hearing this'evidence, the Magistrate remanded accused to March 4. Bail was allowed in £100, accused to report himself daily to the police. OTHER CASES. Samuel Gribble. who was found without excuse on Wednesday night in an enclosed area belonging to Dwan Bros, on the Terrace, was charged with being a rogue and a vagabond in that ho had insufficient means of support. Gribble's only possessions were a number of pawn' tickets. The Magistrate cautioned and discharged him. : . , Simon Joseph Davis was similarly charged, and after inquiring into the facts of his esse the Magistrate discharged him. ' Lucy. Mitchell was sent to gaol for a'* month on a charge of -being idle and disorderly, in that she had insufficient mpans of lawful support. _ _ Frederick Cornwall was fined £3, in default one month's gaol for using obiscene language, and on a charge_of drunkenness lie was convicted and discharged. , For drunkenness, George Conroy and Kathleen Brady wore each fined 20s. or three, days' gaol. ,' '

■ CIVIL CASES. A SIGNWRITER'S CLAIM. A civil dispute concerning the paint-, ing of the representation of an oven en a vehicle was heard before Mr. W. G. Kiddcll, S.M., G. P. Hairna, signwriter, proceeding against Crawley, Hidley, and Co.,.coach builders, .for £12 5s. 1 for .materials furnished in this respect, and work and labour done by plaintiir for defendants. Mr. F. E. Pethenck appeared for'plaintiff, and Mr. H. I*. O'Leary for defendants. • The sum 01 £8 os. was- paid into court by defendants in full settlement of the claim. After hearing tlie evidence, the Magistrate gave judgment for,the amount of the claim less the amount paid into Court, with costs £4 14s. AN AWARD CASE DISMISSED. The ; Jnspector of Awards (Henry E. Mo6ton) proceeded against J. 6. Marshall, furniture-maker, of Wemiigtou, for a penalty of £10 for an alleged breach of the Wellington furniture trade award, in that during the week 'ending January 23 he employed an apprentice and failed to pay him the weekly wage in full as providod by the award. After , hearing the' evidence the Magistrate dismissed the information without costs. Mr. 11. Kennedy appeared 'for defendant. JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Thomas Asher was ordered to pay the Palace Company, Ltd., the sum of £24 3s. 4d., on or before March 11, in default 21 days' imprisonment; H. J. Fraser was ordered to pay T. F. Pickett the sum of £2 15s. by the same date or undergo three days' imprisonment.
