MAIL STEAMER FROM LONDON., After what Is described as an uneventful journey, the New Zealand Shipping Company's R.M.S. Ruahine arrived at Wellington from London early yesterday morning, and subsequently berthed at the Queen's Wharf, No. 1 south. An official report of the, voyage states that the vessel left the Royal Albert Docks on January 6, and m- ' barked passengers on the same day at Gravesend. Dolay was caused in the riTcr by fog until noon next day, when the voyage was continued, and after satisfying the examining authorities, the vessel proceeded down the Channel, strong westerly winds prevailing, Strong north-westerly winds and high sea 6 caused a slightly rough passage through the Bay, after which fine weather and light wind were experelnced to l'cneriffe. This port was reached on January 13, and after coaling the.Ruahine proceeded on her voyage. Fine weather and light to moderate trade winds prevailed through the tropics. Cape Town wa6 reached on' January. 29, and additional coal having been taken aboard, th« veesel continued her voyage next morning. Fresh to strong westerly and south-westerly winds were experienced up_ till February 9. when light winds and bright sunshine in the eouthern - latitudes were much appreciated for-a few days. -These-conditoins were experienced for a, week,, when a fresh W.N.W. pale and high seas were encountered, this lasting for 24 hours. The liner made Hobort at 6.30 on Thursday'last, and after unloading 3Cfl tons of general cargo she loft again at 9_ p.m. Moderate northerly winds and mi-sty weather were experienced during the run, across the Toeman Sea, the vesel arrivinghere at 6.20 o'clock yesterday morning, wirelese news was ill great demand during the voyage hut after passing beyond the range of Durban nothing was heard from Australian stations. The Norwegian barque Sator, which vistied Lyttolton in June, 1905, 36 the British ship Eaxnoch, and loaded wool on behalf of the New Zealand Shipping Company, left Brasselton, Western Australia, on Thursday last with'a cargo of 667,000 feet of jarrah for Lyttelton. The veeel should reach port in the course of about three weeks. The Sator is built of iron, and is of 1226 tons gross register. She was built at Dumbarton in 1877, and i 3 227 ft. long, 35ft. 7in. beam, and 21ft. sin. deep. Sho is commended by Ca.pta.in' Beckinan. A. cable has been received stating that the Shaw-Savill liner Zoalandic has left London for Auckland, Wellington, and the Bluff., Owing to the big increase in freights from New York, and also to steamers being . practically unavailable,.. shipping agents have been, compelled to fall back on sailing vessels, and during the last few weeks several vessels have been taken up" to load general cargo at New York . for Australian ports at the . bis freight of 40s. 6d. per ton. So far, the following vessels have been reported:—Belford, ship, 1771 tons register; Dolbadara Castle, barque, iB6O tons, or Gwydyr Castle, 1480 tons; Osjsa, ship, 1793 tons; and Talus, ship, 1954 From Montreal, via Australian porta and Auckland, the New Zealand Shipping Company's chartered steamer Daldorch arrived in the 6tream' at Wellington at 6.50 p.m. yesterday. She will berth at the Taranaki Street Wharf this morning to discharge her Canadian cargo. . ■ After an absence of about 12 months,- the Union Company's cargo carrier Waitomo is again visiting Lyttelton from Eastern ports, via Bunbury. Tho Waitomo loaded coal at Newcastle in November last- and reached Penang on December 15, sailing again on December 29 for Singapore, which was reached Wo days later.. Hero the vessel loaded a quantity of cargo and tailed an January 2 for Samorang, where she arrived on January 5. On January 7 the Waitomo sailed for Bunbury, yrhich was rrached on January 15, the voyage out being uneventful.
An arrival at Lyttelton from Montreal at 11 a.m. yesterday was the Government chartered steamer Heeperos.: She has brought a full load of wheat far southern ports. Tho local office of the Union Company advise that the chartered eteamer Hornelen arrived at Auckland from Vancouver at 11 a.m. yesterday. The vessel is expected to clear the northern port , for Wellington this evening, end is due here either late oa lYiday night or Saturday morning. Ab the C. and D. liner Mimiro did not get away from Napier till last evening, she will not sail from Wellington for London till Friday of this week. Messrs. Bonnatyne and Co. orvise that the departure of the Defender from Wellington for Picton and Hokitika has been postponed till 4 p.m.' to-day. • On account of bad weather down south, the Shaw-Savill .chartered steamer' Trafalgar has been delayed in her,loading operations, and will not arrive at Wellington till .this evening. ...' Having been delayed in loading at Waitana, the Kaikoura will not arrive at Wellington till Saturday. Departure will be taken for London on Tueeaay, March Z, The New Zealand Shipping Company's liner Otaki, which is due at Wellington from Lyttelton to-morrow, will . sail for London on' Saturday next! The same company's Orari will get away from . Wellington for Home early this morning. The Marine Department has been advised that the Government' steamer Hinemoa loaded stores at Waipapa Point light on Monday. It ia expected that the vessel will leave the Bluff on Friday morning for West Coast Sounds and Greymouth. She is due at Greymouth on Monday or Tuesday next. New Plymouth and West Coast cargo will' be picked, up at Wellington by the Union Company's' Flora on Friday of this-week. During the Himitangi's recent round trip from New Zealand to the Chatham lelando and back she met with particularly bad weather, and consequently the little vessel was considerably delayed at the Islands. On the run up to Lyttelton the conditions had not improved, and the 15 passengers .and 800 sheep had an unenviable experience. On her next return trip from the. Islands the Himitangi' will come, on to. Wellington, via Lyttelton. - Continuing her journey from Greymouth, the Arahura left Wcftport for Wellington, via and Picton, at 1 p.m. yesterday. Port should be mado about the usual time this evening. It ia reported that the New Zealand Shipping Company's steamer Whakatane, which is en route for Auckland to London, left Monte Yideo in continuation of heir journey on February 20. The troopship Yerdala, which conveyed part of the first batch of reinforcements from New Zealand to Egypt, arrived at London on Monday, .February ; ZZ. Tho ruling rates of freight for Newcastle to foreign ports are as follow:—San Francisco, 18s.; Honolulu, 16s:: Acapulco, 425.; Guaymas, 345.; Oallao, 18s.; Valparaiso, Heagua. Bange, 155.; Manila, lfo.; Singapore, 175.; Java, 17s.
