A LIBEL ACTION
, PLAINTIFF AWARDED £50. (By SWesra-Bh.—Prexg A.saociattoo.l Chrlstohurch, February 23. At the Supreme Court, Samuel Kraetzer, racecourse detective, claimed £1000 from tho "Lyttelcon Times" Company for damages for a libel alleged to bo contained in a paragraph in the condensed correspondence, stating that "Patriotic has asked why the Canterbury Jockey Club employs a German as a racecourse detective?" Counsel for plaintiff said although Kraetzer was not mentioned by name, he was identified as the person referred to. The defence was a' denial that the paragraph referred to plaintiff. The jury returned a verdict for plaintiff for £50, and costs. The Judge held that at a time like the present it was obnoxious to be called a German.. Plaintiff gave evidence that he had beon born in Victoria, and that his parents we™ Russians.
