LOWER HUTT BOROUGH

_ The Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presided ait ail ordinary meeting of . the Lower Hutt. Borough Council held last evening., Tiiero wero also " present; Councillors Hodgins, Meldrum, Kempthorne,' Brassed, CSendon, 1 Ball and Hobbs. . .' Mr. J. Bently applied for the use of part of the new recreation Aground to put in a crop of oats for winter feed.— The council decided to reply stating that they had. no intention of letting the ground for that, purpose. The Department of Health imported a case, of enteric fever.. Messrs. Inglis Bros, forwarded- certain details of landing charges on the fire motor chassis, and it was resolved to. ask them to refund the value of certain cases that had been damaged. .The Petone Technical School Board advised that owing to alterations in the regulations 'governing technical schools the allocation of seats on the board would not take place until May. or June, and that the present members would constitute the board until further notice.

A letter,was received from the Petone District High School Committee asking that the Education Board's request for an area on the Hutt Park for a site for a high school should be acceded-to. In. discussing the matter Councillor Ball expressed the opinion that it was decidcdly wrong to give away any land'that had been set aside for recreation purposes. There had been frequent attempts during the last ten years to capture tho Hutt Park, and ho considered that if a site for the purpose of a school was required, the Government should use some of tho land it owned that was lying idle. Councillors Hobbs and Kempthom© spoke against the giving away of land Bet aside for recreative purposes. The Mayor stated that he had advocated a site near to the gas works several years ago, at a conference between the local school committees, but tho Petone representatives wishing to have it in their own borough, nothing definite had been done, until the Education Board chose the Hutt Park after inspecting five Bites in the Valley.

Councillor Ball moved: "That this council protests against the taking of any portion of the Hutt Park for educational purposes, and instructs its delegates to the Hutt Park Committee to vote accordingly, and that a copy of tho resolution bo sent to tho Education Board." Tho motion was carried. It was decided on the motion of Councillor • Moldrum to call the attention of tho polic* to the Hie number nf cyclists that ride without lights after dark in the borough. ■ ,
