FIRE BRIGADES
■ ' CONFERENCE IN TIMARTJ. (By TdcemDli.—Press Aesooiatfoo.) ' Tlmaru, February 22. The thirty-sixth conference of Fire Brigades opened this morning. ' The report showed that the assets total £853, an increase for "the year of £317. The roll of . brigades shows 133—sis more than for the previous year. A sum of £178 was subscribed on behalf of comrades in distress. Fourteen members had earned gold stars for twenty-five years' service. Mention was made of the noble response given by members to the Empire's call, nearly two_ hundred firemen responding. The brigades are to keep these good on the books. , , It is still, raining heavily, and the outlook is somewhat bad for outdoor festivities;
. ELECTION OF OFFICERS. (By Meenwh.—Prasa Association.) Tlmaru, February 22. The Fire Brigade Conference was continued, this afternoon. The PahiEr tua remit Was carried, requesting the Government to frame a by-law- dealing with - the storage of explosives generally, ''in country towns being omit- ; The l elections resulted as follow President.v Fireman Campbell, of Tlmaru, was elected, , Scantlebury withdrawing. Hean, of Addington, <and Scantlebury, of Reefton, were elected vice-presidents. There were twentythree; nominations. Osborne, of Onehunga,' was re-elected treasurer. lhe retiring * president; Salmon, was elected an honorary life member. , )• Several alterations in the competition rules were proposed, aud soma were adopted. ; ~ It was arranged that the executive meet the' Minister on 'Wednesday in regard to the compulsory installation of automatic fire alarms in large stores, warehouses, boardinghouses, and hotels.
