SWIMMING CARNIVAL

AT TEARO BATHS ' A SUCCESSFUL GALA. The annual carnival of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club at the Te Aro Baths on Saturday was a pronounced success. The . attendance was large, and as an evidence of the public interest in'swimming it augurs well for the advent of Duke Kahanamoku at the baths the Saturday after next. On account of the conditions imposed by the City Council as to gate money at club carnivals, tho Wellington Club wero dubious as to whether they would have a balance on the right side of the ledger, but as the proceeds are expected to total about £60, they have every reason to feel gratified with the result. Main interest in Saturday's carnival centred,' of course, round the contest for the Nordon Cupbetween Canterbury and Wellington. The various contests in this event were very keen. The visitors, however, managed to retain the Cup by winning two events out of three. The first contest, the relay race, was easily won by the local team; in the polo match, however, Canterbury was victorious' by two goals to nil, after an exciting battle, and also annexed the neat header contest.

In all the other events the contests wore keen and tho times good. The schools relay championship produced a most exciting race; in which the final rested between Garrett (Marist Bros., Thorndon) and Thorns (Clyde Quay). The former won splendid]v by a very narrow margin, and retained thej Duthie Challenge, Cup'and medals for .his school. During the afternoon Jupp's Band rendered musical selections.

The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke) was among those present. Detailed results of the events
