DEATH OF MR ROYD GARLICK

EXPIRES SUDDENLY IN THE TJUIN. (By Tclccrnßh.—Tj-cbs Association.* Chrlstchuroh, February 21. Mr. Royd Garlick, Director of. Physical Culture to tho Education Department, died oil tho West poast train yesterday afternoon. An inquest was held this afternoon before Mr. H. W. Bishop, District Coroner. Herbert Edgar Longworth, inspector and teachor of physical culturo under tho Education Department, .gave ovidonco that ho had known dccease<l for two 'years. Deceased was married and lived at Wellington. Ho loft Cliristchurch for the West Coast on Thursday, and witness joined him at Greymouth. On Thursday ovening they loft Grcymouth on their return to Christchurc'h. Deceased was then in his usual good state of health. , They tame by train to Otira, when they boarded ono of tho coaches and travelled for sorao distance. At tho foot of a big hill the witness left the coach and walked to tho top, and was followed soon after by Mr. Garlick aud another gentleman." He had bceu at the top of the hill for about five minutes, waiting for the coach, when Mr; Garlick came up, and remarked on tho splendid walk ho had had. Mr. Garlick then got out his camera and took a picture of tho approaching coach. All except Mr. Garlick then boarded tho coach; but Mr. Garlick ran ahead to got another photograph of the full coach. He ran about 20 yards altogether. At Arthur's Pass, where tho party stopped fop lunch, witness noticed nothing unusual witli Mr. Garlick. He (witness) went for a walk after lunch, and on returning was informed that Mr. Garlick was unwell. Mr. Garlick told him that he thought he had got a chill, and complained of • a pain in his back. In the train Mr. Garlick was made as comfortable as possible by Mrs. Garlick. Witness visited Mr. Garlick occasionally during the journey and lie said he \va,s feeling a lot better; in fact, he sat up and started "to read the paper.

A few minutes afterwards Mr. Garlick evidently experienced a. sudden' seizure, as ho looked very ill, and had difficulty in breathing. They lifted him off the seat on to the floor of the carriage, but lie expired within five minutes. Stimulants were given and -artificial lespiration tried, but it was no use. Witness always regarded Mr. Garlick as a strong, .healthy man. He had lost weight, however, during the last 12 •months. Deceased was forty-four years of age. Witness added that he could not say whether Mr. Garlick ato anything at Arthur's Pass. , . Dr. A. C. Sandstein, who made a post-mortem examination of the body, said that death was due to cardiao hernia, consequent upon precedent exertions. The late Mr. Royd Garlick was appointed by the (present Government to inaugurate a comprehensive scheme of physical instruction in the public schools of the i)ominion. Under his fegime the scheme,. which was drafted 1 under the .aegis of'the.Hon. Jas. Alien to supplement the much-criticised school cadet system, and at the same time extend to all the departments of public education an organised system of physical development, has. been a marked success in its initial stages. Mr. Garlick was selected for his grasp of the subjects-he had previously conducted with acknowledged success private classes in physical culture, in which he was associated with Mrs. .Garlick —and also for his organising power, and the success of the new scheme; of physical culture in. tho schools is a tribute to his ability. :
