GAS COMPANY'S PICNIC
Tho Wellington Gas Cotapany's employees' annual picnic wis held at Maidstone Park, Upper Hutt. on Saturday. The party left Te Aro by special train at 9.25 a.m., accompanied by a brass band under the conductorship of Mr. B. ShardlaWj which also dispensed excellent music during the day. A pleasant day was spent in sports, games, etc. After luncheon the following programme was carried oiit:—Open handicap, 100yds.—Denrlchy, 1; Moss, 2. Boot race—Smallbone, . 1'; Chant, 2. Girls' race —Evelyn Jeffflry, 1; Ora White, -2; Single woman's race—Miss Adams, 1; Miss Ward, 2. Men's race, 45 years and over —B. Urwin, 1; M. Green, 2. Gas Co.'s handicap, 220 yds. —Hodk,. 1; Denhehy, 2. . Married women's Olden and Mrs. Maniij dead heat. Three-legged race — Dehheliy and Smallbone, 1; Hook and Mann, 2. Tug-of-war—Fitters' team', 1. Women's guessing competition—Mrs. Urwin. Races for the children were also held, and toys were distributed by a special committee—Messrs. Banks, Haddon, Dehnisou, and Morrell. The followihg coihmittee had charge of the arrangements :—J udge, Mr. C. H. Barrett handicappers, Messrs. Anderson and Walker; general committee, Messrs. Anderson, Banks, Bardsicy, Dfemiison, Haddon; Hook, Hoverd, Morrell, Walker, Tates, Whitoomb ; president, Mr. W. Slake; treasurer, Mr. N. Jeffery; refreshments, Mrs. Jeffery; secretary, Mr.- W. Higgiiibottom.
