The Hon. H. D, Bell goes night to Timaru, where he will be present at the annual Fire Brigade Demonstration. Hine,' M.P. for Sin-atford, arrived in Wellington last evening. Bishop Grimes is still- suffering from Sm'illness that attacked him some time ®go, but ho expects to leave Chfistycnurch for Australia, on a visit, next week. Dr. Basil. Mr. J. H.' Hinton, proprietor of the New Zealandor Hotel, and formerly of the Hotel Bristol, .died at an early iour yesterday morning from heart affection, after ail illness ..-extending over some -.weeks'/; The'lato Mr. Hinton, who was exceedingly popular, was a' native of Nottingham, arid camo out to Victoria at :an early age. . Some ten years ago he ■ came :to Wellington; and was the first proprietor of the 9otel Bristol, at the corner of Cuba and Gliuznee Streets. .Some three years ago he purchased a 'lease -of the New Zealar.cler Hotel, -in 'Manners Street. The deceased, who was \AS years of- age, leaves a widow and ohq son: The hotel was closed throughout yesterday.-.

Dn_ W. J. Barclay, .the new medical superintendent of the-Hospital, took his seat at the meeting of , the Wellington Hospital and Charitable Aid Board for the v first' time yesterday, and was given a hearty welcome. In introducing Dr. Barclay, the chairman (Rev. W. A. Evans) said that he (Dr Barclay) had come into a good inheritance. In Dr. Ewart they had a man. who had done t fine work, and had raised the standard of the Hospital until it was second to none in New Zealand. His successor i(Dr. Hardwick Smith) had maintained that high standard, and He hoped that it would be maintained in :the future. Apologising ; for not. being a speaker, Dr. .Barclay 6aid he had been extremely diffident in taking over the work hero, as he was quite' aware that the Hospital was considered second to hone in the public estimation. He hoped that he wo.uld carry on the work as successfully aa'those who had gone before, him. Mr. C. A. Wilkinson, M.P. for Egmont, was in Wellington yesterday. The Rev. D. Dutton. "of Caversbam, Dunedin, has been-appointed resident Presbyterian chaplain to the camp at Trentham. He will enter upon' his duties .there on March 6, from which date the Presbyterian Institute at the camp will be under his direction. Captain Sydney Herbert Davies, who died on Tuesday evening, was (says a Dunedin correspondent) one of the small number of Crimean veterans remaining. The eldest- 6on of the late Admiral George Davies, he was born-in what was. then tho town and county of .Poole, . Dorsetshire, in 1838. Entering the Royal Navy in 1851, he joined Nelson's old flagship, the Victory, as was at that time the invariable custom pending appointment to a sea-going snip. Partly in the Black Sea Fleet and .partly in the; Naval Batteries. before Sevastopol, he 6erved throughout the Crimean War, receiving a medal and clasp and the Turkish medal. He then transferred •to >the; land forces,, receiving his first' commission in the Army in' recognition of previous service. After receving his • commission in the 16th Foot, he passed through the 5ch001,..; of Musketry at Hythe, and 1 was afterwards instructor, of musketry to his regiment. He accompanied the .Expeditionary Force to Canada in 1861. The deceased gentleman joined the Confederate Forces in 1863, travelling, from Halifax, Nova Scotia, in a schooner running the blockade. He landed in South Carolina. His first engagement with the C.S.A. was Chancellorsville, the famous, battle at which "Stonewall" Jackson so distinguished himself, and wa6 unfortunately ■ killed at the Battle of Gettysburg. Captain Davies was,wounded during Pick" ett's famous charge. Ha was eventually appointed adjutant, and assistant in-spector-general to "Heath's Division, which appointment he'held until Genoral Lee surrendered'on April 10, 1865. Subsequently, with the New Zealand Forces, he served in the latter phase of; the Maori troubles, receiving the New Zealand medal. After a lengthy residence at Timaru, ho came to Dunedin in 1896, removing in the following year to Roslvn. ■ ■
