MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS

ATTITUDE OF LABOUR. Very i little interest is at present being shown in the municipal elections, which are to take place on the last Wednesday in' April. Nothing definite has.been announced in connection with Oho Mayoralty, although Mr. R. Fletcher, M.P., ihas been mentioned as a. candidate, and the present Mayor (Mr. J._P. Luke) will rid doubt be asked to offer his services to the City again: Lahour is holding over consideration .of tho question for the preesnt, but probably the party' will not run a candidate for the Mayoralty unless more than two other candidates come forward—as in 1912—and there appears to be the opportunity of success on a split vote. The Labour Representation Committee, which met- on Tuesday night, decided to put forward eight candidates for the City_ Council, eight candidates for tho Hospital Board, and three candidates for the Harbour Board. The various unions have been invited to nominate, candidates and the list will close on March 5. In . the event of there being more than the required number of candidates for the three bodies,- a ballot will be 'taken in the Trades Hall of those unionists, who feel sufficiently interested.to go aad record their votes. ■ ■ It is understood that several Labour leaders, who have hitherto been'oil'the' Lahour ticket at these elections, aro' declining nomination on this occasion,' and although the ticket is much smaller than usual,' it will contain several neir names. _ At last night's meeting of the Wellington branch of the Social Democratic I Party Messrs. Holland, Chapman, and Glover were nominated as the Labour Representative Committee' - candidates for the City Council; Mrs: Donaldson,' and Messrs. Richards and Ward for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. Nominations for the Mayoralty" and Harbour Board were held over until the next meeting. U. ;
