LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
ECCS. , . Sir,—l read with interest tie romarks of Mr. J. Godber that appeared in your journal on tho above subjcct. . .We are all selfish beings, and roadyto cast tho burden onto the other fellow's shouldors. Because tho price of eggs.'.'is; up," Mr. Godber, a groat consumer of eggs in his largo Business, immediately suggests the removal of the protection duty on eggs, and yet, I presume, ho knows wheat, and inferior grain at that, is now retailed at 7s. 6d. por bushel. He mourns tho killing of poultry, and so do I. His reason is he cannot buy eggs so plentifully now, as in past years, to store for the dear season; I regret the passing of the fowl beoauso I think if the producer has to pay. more for his product (or tho cause of same, i.e., wheat) lie should get a quid pro quo for his expenditure. ■ If wheat IS, say, 50 per cent, more now than' normal, so should the eggs be in the. sarao proportion. Why should the producer be tho sufferer? The city manufacturer must bear the burden till he again passes it on to the consumer. As a representative of tho egg-producing class I certainly object to 't3io duty being removed. ' Bread is up: meat is up: and why not eggs? In this crisis we must all hear the burden fairly and keep on smiling. I wish to point out. while writing that the poultry man should not too hurriedly pass his fowls out because the price of' corn is high. If he considers for a moment he will see that the 'price how obtained for eggs is fairly well equal to the pries of wheat. Eggs are now anything between Is. 9d. and 2s. per dozen, and wheat is 7s. 6d. per bushel in this district. Those who aro holding wheat for flour -must be sore it is "milling" wheat, and if not, it must come to the poultry men in the long ran. I therefore urge tho poultry keepers to hang on, as new wheat will soon be on the market. —I am, etc.. <, MARK MAXTOR
