SOCIALISTS AND THE WAR
CONFERENCE IN LONDON
• London, February 16. Mr. Keir Hardie presided at a conference of English, French, Belgian, and Russian Socialists in London, which passed a resolution that German victory would mean defeat and destruction to the democracy and liberty of Europe. It was resolved to resist any attempt to transform this defensive war into a war of conquest. The Allies' victory must aim at popular liberty and unity, and the independent autonomy of the nations and the peaceful federation of the world. The working classes after the war must unite to suppress militarism and onforce international arbitration.
The conference also demanded .the liberation and compensation of Belgium ; that the status of Poland ■ bo settled in accordance with the wishes of its people; either autonomy or complete independence for Alsace and Lorraine; and that the Balkan population annexed by force should have the right freely to dispose of itself as it wished.
