MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ROBBING SLOT TELEPHONES YOUNG OFFENDER IN COURT Yesterday morning the youth who was arrested the previous day by Detective Mason and Acting-Detective Tricklebank aa being responsible for the plundering of telephone boxes in the City, appeared before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Juvenile Court, Eighteen charges were preferred against the lad, involving a; total amount of £3 or £4. The youth admitted having been responsible for the offences. In explaining the circumstances of. the case Chief Detective Boddani said that the lad was unfortunate in that his_ father had been an inmate of the Porirua. Asylum for the past five years. His mothor was a respectable, hard-working woman, who had to support five children in addition to the accused. To support her family the mother had to toil from morning till evening. In view of these circumstances it was useless asking for restitution of the stolen money. The Magistrate concurred with this and said the best thing that could be done was to send accused to the Wereroa Training Form. An order was accordingly made.
OTHER POLICE CASES. Mr. D. G, A..Cooper, S.M., presided over a short sitting of the-police business of tile. Court. James Shivnan was fined £3, in default one month's gaol for using obscene language. . For drunkenness Kate Brady (prohihited) was fined 40s. in default seven days' gaol, and Kathleen Stanley, James Ashby, Thomas O'Brien, and Herbert Alexander jlulford were each fined 10s. or 48 hours' for insobriety. Four first offenders wore dealt with. CIVIL CASES. CLAIMS FOR RENT. A civil suit concerning the leasing of a property at Belmont was heard before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., Isaac Johnson claiming £15 12s. 2d. in this respect from James Inglis Alexander. According to plaintiff's statement he had leased the property to plaintiff on February 7, 1912, for a term of throe years. Defendant had paid the rent in full up to March 1, 1913, but from that date until he left tho premises on June 6, 1914, lie had paid the rant short fortnightly; £14 195.-8 d . was accordingly claimed-for this shortage, plus 12s. 6d. damage to windows in the house on the property. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate gave judgment for plaintiff for £14 19s. Bd., with costs £3 7s. Mr. J. C. Peacock appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. P. W. Jackson for defendant. Edward Balcombe Brown, solicitor, as executor of the will of the late Mary Kate Jellicoe, sued Frank. Fenby, cabinetmaker, of 39 Cambridge Terrace, for £8 155., as jent due on defendant's premises. Defendant disputed the claim, stating that ho had paid the rent, but his cheques had been returned, whilo entries in the rent collector's book had been falsified. After listening to the evidence tho Magistrate (Mr. D. G A. Cooper) advised defendant to pay the rent at once and gave judgment for tho amount olaitned with Court costs 10s.
. DAMAGED IN TRANSIT. A civil claim concerning tho packing and delivery of certain goods was heard before Mr. W. G. Riddell. S.M., E. A. Taylor, commercial traveller, claiming £9-10s. Gd. from Wm. M'Lellan, carrier. Plaintiff alleged that through 'the negligcnce of defendant tho goods which he engaged him to deliver were forwarded to liim in a damaged condition. Mr. 11. Kennedy appeared for plaintiff, and Mr. E. P. Bunny for defendant. After hearing, the evidence the Magistrate reserved his decision. ' ,

JUDGMENT SUMMONSES. Thos. Riddler was ordered ta pay Sliarland and Co., Ltd., £6 13s. 6d., by March 2, in defaulfc six daj's 1 gaol.
