Official.—"We have progressed on the Upper San, capturing a thousand Anstrians, five machine-guns, and a gun. "The Germans were repulsed on the heights between the Beskid and Wyszkow^Passes with great losses, and were also dislodged from a portion of their fortified heights between, the Dukla and Wyskow Passes. ■ The Premier has received the following from the High Commissioner, dated ' London, February 16, 5.30 a.m.: — "Petrograd reports-further actions'on the Niemen-Vistula front. In the Carpathians the Russians repulsed persistant Austrian attacks south-west of the Dukla Pass, and slightly progressed on the left hank of the Upper San, capturing a thousand prisoners. A German attack between the Beskid and Wyszkow Passes was repulsed with great losses to the enemy, who were dislodged from a fortified position. ... "Considerable Austrian forces are' advancing on. Nadworna, and in Bukowina." . Nadworna is a railway junction on the Galician side of the Carpathians, and some twelve miles west of the Bukowina frontier line. PRZEMYSL GARRISON IN DESPERATE STRAITS. London, February 15. 'Austrian deserters from Przemysl state that the only meat rations consist of preserved horseflesh. ITALY'S WAR PREPARATIONS ' • STRICT WATCH ON EXPORTS TO AUSTRIA. London, February 15. Italy has hypothecated a further £6,800,000 for extra military expenditure consequent on international events. Consignments of rice and other cereals destined for Austria and hidden on the railways have been seized by the Italian Customs. The quantity of prohibited exports stopped is so great that many hotels and houses have been converted into stores.—"Times" and Sydney "Sun" services.
