A NEW ZEALAND SHIP

H.M.S. PHILOMEL'S RECORD. A brief statement concerning H.M.S. Philomel waa made to a reporter by the Hon. J. Allen yesterday: "The Philomel is a New Zealand ship," said Mr Allen. "The Admiralty handed her over to us, and we are paying for her upkeep and repairs and the Salaries and wages of the officers and men. She is a New Zealand ship in, every sense of the word, although, under, conditions imposed by the P e fenoe_ Act) she was banded over to the Admiralty as soon as war hroke out. Many of the rnea cn the Philomel have their wives and dependents in New Zealand-, and in every 6ense of the term the Philomel is a 6 much New Zealand as the Expeditionary Forces we are sending away. I feel sure that New Zieajauclara will be proud of anything that the Philomel ha 3 done, or may do, and always be deeply interested in its doings. The crew of the Philomel has been working under very trying conditions. They were called, away at a moment's totice, very little time was left for the maldflg of preparations, and although certain repairs had to be carried out in New Zealand after her arrival, she has lasted out tlje other two ships, and I have no doubt that she has been doing very good work for the Empire. "I ha,ve,'' he went on to say, "already, mentioned the food woik Bhe has done in'convoying British. French, and In- ! dian troops, and the destruction she effected among tho enemy's dhows, but B'j far I have no information regarding the action which resulted in the casualties mentioned, 1 am, however, perfectly sure tliafc I'bft rendered a good account of herself, and I am very sorry to hear-of tho casualties reported. I am sure. that, all New Zealanders will join with me m the expression of that sentiment.

"I want to educate the public mindas, to what the Philomel is. She is ours, and we are much more closely in touch with the navy by reason of her possession than we would bo if wo had (simply made'a formal pro rata contribution to t'ho Admiralty."
