CITY COUNCIL.
/ ■'A SPECIAL MEETING. : A special meeting of the City Council was held last night to deal with certain notices of motion. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), .Councillors G. Frost, J, Godber, H. Buddie, W, J. Thompson, L. M'Kenzie, R. 'A.Wright, -A. H. Hindmarshj M. F, Luckie, and J. E. Fitzgerald. The Mayor thanked members of the council for the letter of sympathy forwarded to him on the death of his brother (Mr. George Luke)." .Leaye of absence was granted ; to Councillor R. Fletcher. A letter was received from Councillor, T; C. A. Hislop. who has . received a commission in tne' Expeditionary Force now in training at Trentham, asking for leaye "of absence for the remainder of his term of office. He expressed regret at being compelled to sever his connection with pi vie affairs, but he thought that young men were required now for other work, fffldbo considered it his duty to go to the front. - The Mayor, moving that leave of absence be granted,' congratulated Lieutenant Hislop on his patriotic spirit of self-saefifice in interrupting a promising professional and public career to go to assist the Empire»i"~the present struggle. ' ' t The motion was with applause, The Mayor also congratulated the "Evening Post" on having lately celebrated its jubilee.
The audited; balance-sheet for the year 1913-14 was approved, The council'then proceeded to considerations of tho motions, discussions on which are reported elsewhere.
