THE SCHEIDEL CASE
GERMAN ON .NEW SOUTH WALES WAGES BOARD. ' (Rec. February 11, 7.45 . p.m.) : Sydney, February 11. Mr. ; J. H. Estell (Minister of Labour and .Industries): tabled the papers garding the Scneidel case. Dr. Scheidel denied that tho had been acting as German Consul, or that he had been in touch with the German Government.
[The New South Wales State As-; sembly, debating m December last the policy of appointing ; natural-born Germans to official and State positions, discussed tie .appointment of Dr. August Scheidel as employers' representative on the Wages Board. The evidence showed; that Dr. Scheidel,was born in Germany, and naturalised'in New Zealand in 1890 and in the Commonwealth in 1913. He managed the New Zealand Gold Extraction Company, and was also con- 1 nected with .the . Mining Trusts Limited and the New-Zealand Mines Limited. He also recently acted as German Consul at Perth. Colonel Onslow, in referring to Dr. Scheidel's appointment, said that the German'S.ecret Service was admirably organised. It was known that information was getting otifc by means of wireless. Recently 'a German professor who . had. received Ambassadorial rights was found in possession of valuable secrets when about to leave Australia.. ' Others had been arrested with strategical sketches of tho Sydney .coast line in their pockets. No action was taken.' . It was\ alleged that Scheidel was acting as' Krupp's intermediary between the metal buyers .of Australia aud; Germany,, and acting as German , Consul, reporting on deposits of i scheolito and molybdenite. . Dr. Scheidel was en route to Germany.]
