THEFT FROM A CHINAMAN CHARGE AGAINST A YOUNG WOMAN A young woman namod May Wills appoarod before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., in tho Magistrate's Court yesterday, charged with stealing from a house at Petono £26 in notes, tho property of Charlie Yurn, a Chinaman. Sho was defended by Mr. H. F. O'Leary, pleaded not guilty, and was committed to tho Supremo Court for trial. Bail was allowed in £25. RF/JALCrTRANT TROOPERS. Ernest Dallas, who was responsible for some disturbance in Manners Street on Tneoday, appoarod to answer charges of using obscene language, assaulting Constable Gordino, resisting Constable Gordine, and •wilfully damaging a police helmot valued at 9s. 3d. On tho first two charges he was fined £3 or 21 days' gaol; on tho third ho was fined' £2 or 14 days; and on tho fourth he was convicted and ordered to pay the cost of the damage douo, with witnessos' expenses 4s. A trooper named John Donaldson, who pleadod guiltyto a charge of assaulting James Evans, was.stated by Inspector Heudrey to be another man, who had broken away from,/ Trentham and was practically a deserter. On Tuesday he invited Evans in to have a drink. While there he • picked up a quarrel. Evans tried to avoid trouble, but accused followed him outside and assaulted him. - When accused had finished whatever sentence should be meted out to him, said the Inspector, the military authorities wishedto deal with him.. The Magistrate imposed a fine of £3 with witnesses' expenses 45., in default 14 days' gaol. OTHER CASES. 'Albert Saunders', alias Burke, one of a gang of vagabonds and disorderlies, was sent to gaol for six months on a charge of being a rogue and- vagabond, in that he habitually consorted with reputed thieves,' having been .previously convicted as an idle and disorderly person on December 30, 1913. . The two seamen from the Gorinthic, James Andrews and Frederick Jas. Patching, who were charged with .tho theft of a mail bag and contents, valued at £9, the property of the PostmasterGeneral, were further remanded until to-day. _ • , • A boy of sixteen years, Victor Tipene, pleaded guilty to stealing two. pairs of boots, the property of George Wilson. In order that further inquiries might be made, the case was adjourned till Saturday. John Galbraith was further rematided to February 17 on a charge of being found, helplessly drunk. ■ A further romand was granted in the case of Frank Joseph Kerwin, charged with the theft of 17. sacks, valued, at Bs. 6d., as the owner of the sacks had not then been discovered. James Gallagher, «.n old offender, wsb fined £3 or one month's gaol for drunkenness—his sixth offonce within the past six months. 'For drunkenness, Martin Samuelspn was fined 10s.', or 48 hours' gaol. Two first offenders were dealt with. Two boys, aged 14 and 15 years respectively, were charged with stealing 6s. 3d. from Gordon C. M. Dumbleton. Each was convicted and ordered to be sent to the Wereroa Training Farm. The stolen, money was ordered to be refunded by the parents. .
UPPER HUTT COURT
MONTHLY STTTLNGL At the monthly sitting of tihe Upper Hutt Court, held yesterday, Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided. Sidney Crawford was fined 55., with costs 75., for being on licensed premises on a certain Sunday morning. L. Baigent was fined 55., with costs lis,, for allowing two pigs to wander on a public road, and a similar penalty was imposed upon Alfred Santley and' Harry Kingham for allowing stock to wander. . ■' George Santley (represented by Mr. R. H.'Webb) was the complainant in. a case against Charles Huckstep, who was, charged with using insulting and abusive language. After considerable evidence had been heard the-Magistrate dismissed the case, on the ground of its conflicting nature, and that evidently the words were not used within the hearing of passers-by. In the following civil cases judgment Was given for plaintiff by default:—J. Bishop v. C. Russell, £1 6s. 6d., costs Bs.; A. and W. Keys v. George Flutey, sen., £3 Is. 6d., costs 125.; same v. Henry Flutey, £4 Is. 9d.. costs 125.; same v. E. O. Phillips, £1 7s. Id., costs 10s.; Sarah Keys v. Dennis Kelly, £1 10s., costs 10s.; Silverstream Brick and Tile Co. v. W. J. Lee, £10 12s. 9d., costs 21s,
