WAIROA A.& P. SOCITY.

A FLOURISHING BODY. The Wairoa Agricultural and Pastoral Society held their sixteenth annual show during Carnival Week, and met with unqualified success, the entries showing a substantial increase in almost all classes over last year's entries; although .they did not come up to the entries of some past shows. However, this 'was in a measure due to the tact that the committee had cut ojt some of the classes of lesser, importance, in view of the disturbing efteas of ;he ,war and.other causes. The exhibits this year were of a high standard, notwithstanding the dry season wh:cb" the district has experienced. The president of the society (Mr. Alex. Sinclair), ably ■ assisted by a strong committee and the secretary (Mr. R. T. Esther), worked hard to keep up interest in the show, which is recognised as being one of the best mediums of advertising the possibilities of the district. The society is fortunate in the use of suitable grounds on the racecourse close to the town. For some years the show was: held at Frasertown, and for a time two rival shows—one at Frasertown, the older body, and one at Wairoa —were held. _ It was seen that this was not in the interests of the district as a whole, and an amalgamation was effected. In 1905. the total entries were only 509, of'which horses comprised 236, almost half the total, and the entry of sheep was only 78. Now the total entries reach over 700, although the record was nearly 1000, in 1911, and sheep have made great progress, till last show they, reached 173. There has been a slight falling off in competitions, but a distinct advance of recent years has been made in the classes devoted to horticulture and domestic arts, showing that the townspeople are taking an increasing interest in the' annual function. :

The St. Mary's Church grand festival on. the tennis courts, Buckle Street, will be continued this afternoon. , The New Zealand Farmer!!' Co-op. Distributing Co., Ltd., have been instructed by Mr. ]?. L. Simpson, stablekeepor, Lower Hutt, whose lease has expired, to sell by public auction all his horses, harness, conveyances, etc. The sale takes place on February 16. Residents of Kelburn, Northland, Karori,. and Makara who have enrolled or desire to enrol in the National Reserve are invited to meet at Messrs. W. H. Turnbull's auction Toom, Panama ■Street, Wellington, at S o'clock this evening. Notwithstanding the fact that the proprietors of restaurants of the city have increased their luncheon tariff by threepence, Mrs. Harrison, of the Hose Tea and Luncheon Booms, notifies in this issue .that the old chargo of one shilling is being retained at her rooms. Miss Teresa il'Enroe has resumed her classes in voice production and singing at No. 8 Boulcott Chambers, Boulcott Street. The ferry excursions to the bays continue to be a success. This evening the late boat will be delayed until 11.15 p.m. Messrs. Abraham and Williams, Ltd., instructed by ilr. U. Tully, Waikanae, will sell his stock and implements at the farm on Wednesday, February 17, at 1 p.m.
