ENGINEERS' FAREWELL

INSTITUTE MEMBERS OFF TO THE FRONT. r. A very successful farewell social evening was tendered to eight engineers ont of the Union Company's fleet who are proceeding to the front, by members of the 'Wellington Branch of the Maririe Engineers' Institute at the rooms last evening. Mr. J. Carswell, president, was in the chair, and the guests of the evening were Sergeant W. H. Coates (lato of the Atua), Corporal J. M'Arthur (late Mokoia), Privates A. Marshall (late Kittawa), C. M. Baird (late Kini), C. Le Grys (late Katoa), G. Watt (late Warrimoo), B. D. Smith (late Kurow), and A. S. Ewcn (late Moeraki). There was a large attendauce,' and the social hall had been tastefully decorated with the national flags of the Allies. In proposing the toa6t of "Our Guests," Mr. Carswell said that the Institute of Marine Engineers in New Zealand was proud to know that so many members had gone-to the front. It was one of the outstanding features in the history of the Institute. He felt sure that many more engineers in New Zealand would follow iu the footsteps of their comrades, and thus help to beat our great national foe. Iu conclusion, the speaker 6aid that he had been informed that out of the 230 New Zealanders who had volunteered for the front in London, 61 were engineers—a circumstance to be exceptionally proud of. He wished those present "Good luck and safe return to New Zealand." Sergeant Coates and Corporal M'Arthur responded. Other toasts honoured during the j evening were: —"Army and Navy," pro- 1 posed by Mr. A. Walker, and'responded to by Major A. R. Hislop and Mr. J. M'Phcrson'; "Marine Engineers' Institute," Mr. T. Townsend responded to by Mr. Carswell; "Transport Engineers," Mr. J. Ilankino, responded to by Mr. M'lntyre, chiof engineer of the Tahiti. Mr. Wallace, secretary of the Institute, announced that it had been docided to relievo all ongineors who volun-' teer for activo sorvice, of all dues from the time tlioy enlisted. - The following contributed to the musical programme :•—Mossrs. U. Grange, P. M'Coll, A. Walker, M'Alpine, E. Atmore, T. Townsend, V. Mnrcnant, R. S. Smith, i\. Hcnly, M'lntloe, 3'. Carswell, and Wilson.
