FLAG INCIDENT ON LUSITANIA
REGARDED AS A BLUNDER OPINIONS OF AMERICAN NEWSPAPERS London, February 9. The majority of American newspapers regard the Lusitania's hoisting of the United States flag as a blunder which will create more commotion than Germany's proclamation. Some of the papers consider that this action makes the flag worthless as a protection for American ships. [A message from London, dated Bth inst., stated:—The Cunard liner Irositania, when nearing Ireland, hoisted the American flag in pursuance of the Admiralty's wireless instructions and arrived at Liverpool safely J USE OF BRITISH FLAG BY A GERMAN STEAMER. New York, February 9. The newspapers recall that the Hambnrsr-Amerika Company's steamer Bohemia entered New York on August 15, flying tho British flag and the White Star Company's colours, deceiving the British warships. WHEN THE GERMANS USED THE SPANISH FLAG. . (Rec, February 10, 11.25 p.m.) London,. February 10., It is pointed out that the German steamer Erefeld used the Spanish flag when landing the crews of steamers sunk by the Karlsruhe, "THE SNEER THAT WE ARE LEAST INCLINED TO TOLERATE" ; OUTSPOKEN SENTIMENTS OF A LONDON PAPER. London, February 9. The "Daily Express" writes:—While the use of a neutral flag by British merchantment may legally be consistent, it will, nevertheless, disturb British opinion. Such tactics seem inexpedient, even humiliating. Since when has the Union Jack become the colours to be hauled down timidly, or to offer inadequate protection on all seas? The whole affair leaves a disagreeable taste in the mouth of England.' Our confidence in the Admiralty and the Navy is such that we are bound to regret profoundly a. resort to a subterfuge which,' while it in no way excuses German piracy, may give tho enemy and neutrals an opportunity for the sneer that we are least inclined to tolerate. ' SUBMARINES CANNOT MAKE LONG INVESTIGATIONS.' Amsterdam, February 9. German newspapers state that if America acquiesces in the Lusitania's misuse of the American flag it will be impossible' for a German warship to ascertain whether ships are neutral Or not, and it'will be sheer suicide for submarines to make long investigations. The papers declare that there will be no question of contraband or noncontraband in British waters after February 18.
