The Hon. J. Allen returned, to Wellington from Dunedin yesterday. The Hon. W. Fraser arrived in Wellington after a visjt to Otago yesterday. The principal object of his journey south was to open the last completed section of the Catlins railway on Thursday. . On Friday he went with the Hon. James Allen to Lawrence and Waitahuna, returning to Dunedin on Saturday night. Mr. JT A. Mitchell, of the New Zealand Railways head office staff, has been transferred to Levin. On the eve of his departure he was presented by Mr. R. W. M'Villy, on behalf of the staff, with a token of their esteem. Mr. H. Mackay, chief draughtsman in the Napier Lands Office, who underwent a serious operation some days ago, is still in a somewhat uncertain oondition, though showing slight signs of provement.'The Wellington delegates to the annuaT" conference of the Amalgamated Society of Coach and Motor-body Builders will be Messrs. E.'Crawley (president), T. Munt (secretary), and S. Rouse. The conference will be held at Timaru during Easter week. Archbishop CShea Ims returned to Wellington from Christehurch. He was accompanied by Rev. Father Roche. _ Mr. Ecksley, of Auckland, who enlisted with, the ■ Army Service Corps, and was wounded and invalided back to England, is Mr. Frederic H. Exley, son of Mr. and Mrs. i: W Exley, of Northcote. Mr. Exley's injuries were caused by the explosion of a benzine tank, which caused the death of a member or the A.S.C. who was standing close by, wounded another, and smashed the shoulder of Mr. Exley. Mr. Herbert Radcliffe, of Wellington, chief clerk in the Mines Department, left Auckland for Samoa by the Atna on Monday. He was accompanied by Mrs. Radcliffe. \ Mr. Wilfred Beech, who has ■for some time past occupied a position on the staff of the Wellington Publishing Company, Ltd., was recently appointed clerk to the Makara County Council, and he takes up his duties in that position forthwith. Cabled information has been received by Mr. C. Z. Clayton, of Auckland,/ that his son, Mr. J. Clayton, has joined the Royal Sussex Regiment as second lieutenant, and has left England for the front to go on service with his regiment. Air. J. Clayton left New Zealand with the. Main Expeditionary Force, and on arrival in Egypt he went on to England. Mr. W. O'Shea, who has been stationmaster. at Hamilton for 18 months, has been promoted to be relieving officer at Wellington. He will be succeeded at Hamilton by Mr. Morn, of Avondale. At Trentham camp the following promotions have been sanctioned: —Private Pickering to be corporal; Private Pul- j linger to be. lance-corporal. Corporal A. L. Morgan, formerly of Masterton, has been promoted from corporal to sergeant-major in the 3rd Reinforcements Contingent.' The Rev. F. Sinclaire, M:A., a former Auckland Grammar School boy and a graduate of the University of New Zealand, has been appointed lecturer in English literature to the University of. Melbourne. In the New Zealand University Mr. Sinclaire took first-class honours in classics, and also held the senior scholarship in Latin. After taking his degreohe proceeded to Oxford, and took a post-graduate course, winning both the Martineau Prize and the Williams Scholarship, open for competition to graduates of any university. Before his present appointment Mr. Sinclaire had delivered Extension lectures under the auspices of Melbourne University. Mr. Hugh Baker, a representative of several Australian trade journals, is visiting Wellington.
