HUTT COUNTY AFFAIRS

MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL. < The ordinary monthly meeting of the Hutt County. Council was' held yesterday. 'There were present: Councillors W. J. Howell (iti the chair), J. Wakeham,, W. Galloway, T. Edwards, J. Whiteman, and M. W. Welch. By way of special business a resolution was passed in connection with the loan [proposals of. No. 10, loan'special rating area. By this motion a rate of l-50d. in the £ will be levied on land in the Akatarawa' district, so as to cover the interest On the £750 loan for building the new bridge there. ' A letter was received from the State Guaranteed Advances Office agreeing to entertain the council's application for a loan of £750 for the Hutt River Bridge at Akatarawa. In regard to the council employees' superannuation scheme, the superintendent of the National Provident Fund wrote intimating that he would supply details in this respect on receipt of the necessary returns from the council. It was decided to grant permission to the Wellington City Council to lay a water main along Pitoitoi Road to Day's Bay. The application of the Upper Hutt Town Board for a contribution of £200 toward the oost of the construction of (the Whakatiki Road waß refused. . The following three motions were put to the meeting and carried:—"(l) That all previous resolutions providing for the oharging of all surveys to general account be rescinded, and that in future each survey' be charged to' general account or riding account respectively as the case may be. (2) In any case where a Government grant or contribution from any course is insufficient to provide for the cost of the work for which the grant .or contribution was made, the balance of cost of the said work shall be charged to general account or riding' account as the case nfay be. (3) That the cost of purchase and repair of all tools during any financial year be equally charged to general account and the account of the riding in which they are used." . file monthly report of the board's overseer (Mr. J. W. Cudby) stated that improvements had been established at Plimmerton and Paekakariki, while pipe culverts had been put in on Whiteman's Valley Road, and two on the Akaiarawa Road. In regard to protection of the southern approach to, Mungaroa Bridge, wire had been obtained and crates made at a point where the bridge was threatened by the altered course of the river. At a bridge at the eastern end of Park Line, new stringers and other timbers had been added. On the Day's Bay Road a dangerous bend had been widened w 21ft. It was recommended that an improvement be effected in the width of the road at ihe entrance to the wharf at Day's Bay, at an. estimated cost of £20. It wa3 further reported that the road connecting Belmont . and Western Hutt through Messrs. Natnsche and Cross's property had been completed, and it was recommended that the dedication be accepted. The overseer recommended that 27} chains of the Paeka'rariki Hill Road be widened to a varying width from 2ft. to 10ft., at an estimated cost, including necessary culverts, of £49 2s. 6d. The report was adopted.
