STRONG POSITION HELD A CHECK IN THE CARPATHIANS . Petrograd, February 8. After crossing the Bzara the Russians occupied a strong position close to tho Germans' advanced base. Two companies of infantry, commanded by Captain Petroff Spiridonoff,_ cut the wire entanglements • guarding the base, and despite the enemy's artillery fire the men wriggled on tueir hips and elbows for two and a half miles and drovo out the enemy. DESPERATE FIGHTING NORTH OP THE VISTULA. (Rec. February 9, 11.5 p.m.) Petrograd, February 9. Official.—"Fighting is more desperate at Serpiee (on the right bank of the Vistula, north-east of Plock). 'A Bavarian soldier states that during a charge at the R-awka he'saw parapets in front of the Russian trenches, and a nearer view disclosed the faot that the parapets were bodies of Germane, frozen in the trenches, only a hundred paces apart.
