TURKISH MARCH ON EGYPT

" TIE, BIG' ATTACK ENEMY'S MOVE ' UNCERTAIN SEVERE FIGHTING IN . ■ POLAND RUSSIAN SUCCESSES BRITISH PARLIAMENT & THE WAR A GUARDED STATEMENT ' Nows from tho Western theatre of .the war is somewhat scrappy, and relates principally to the operations along the front from the region round La Bassee to the Argonne. In the Eastern theatre the Russians have been in some severe lighting. : There have been'successful operations on both sidos of tho Vistula, but the advance through the Carpathians has been checked for the moment, and the Russians have fallen back, this, however, without prejudice to their plan of operations. There aro no new developments in Egypt. The Turkish losses in the recent fighting have been greater than was at first estimated, hut'they are still retiring, and there is no enemy within 20 miles of the Canal. Tho probabilities of an advance by the main Turkish force are being interestingly canvassed, but it is liot possihje to say yet whether that advance will ever be made. The big attack is still pending. The Allies' torpedo-boats have effectively bombarded Turkish ports in the Dardanelles. The "big ex-Gerniau battle-cruiser Goeben is report- ■ ed to. have been so badly damaged as to be beyond hope of local'repairs being effected..' The dervish nuisance in Somaliland has been effectively dealt with by an Anglo-Indian contingent. The vaunted threat of the Germans to give effect to their -plan of establishing a strict blockade of neutral'icommerce is made the subject of further expressions of opinion from various sources. The British Parliament, now assembled, has discussed —with important exceptions—the general aspects of Britain's participation in tho war, and the Press Bureau, incidentally, has been tinder- the fire of criticism in the House.
