AN IMPUDENT STORY

Arthur Walsh, or "Shorty," as he is more familiarly known, has only been out of gaol a week or so, and on Saturday, no doubt with the hope 'of "raising the wind," he went into, the Columbia Hotel, told the lift porter that he was a lodger, and wanted room 10, second floor. "Shorty" was elevated to the second floor, and the porter saw him disappear alone; the passage to seek apparently a well-earned rest. Tho porter discovered later that room 10 was occupied by a permanent boardor, and becoming suspicious rang for the police. A constable arrived, and after a search "Shorty" was discovered in bed in room 17. He had his clothes on. "Shorty" had not paid for tho room, and all that he could say was that he was "having a bit of a sleep." Yesterday "Shorty" was charged in tho Magistrate's Court with being a rogue and a vagabond. He pleaded 'not guilty, sevoroly cross-cxamincd all the witnesses, indignantly pleaded his innocence, but all to no purpose. He was convicted. Inspector Hendroy had some very uncomplimentary remarks to make, about "Shorty." "He is a thief, does no honest work at any time, and I havo not the slightest doubt that his object in going to tho Columbia Hotel was to rob tho other boarders." "Shorty" was made a lawful Government lodger for a period of three months.
