SATURDAY NIGHTS ALLEGED PARTICIPATORS IN COURT Following on .Saturday night's brawl, two' of .the -alleged prominent participants, Robert Brown, an ex-trooper, and John James Clayton, a trooper, appeared before Mr. D. 6. A. Cooper, S.M., in the Magistrate's Court yesterday to answer various charges. Brown was charged (1) With assaulting Constable Devine; (2) using obscene language; (3) wilfully damaging a constable's uniform; (4) assaulting Constable Robert T. Heaney. Clayton was charged: (1) With being disorderly while drunk; (2) resisting Constable Willcocks; (3) damaging a hansom cab. ■' The cases were ordered to stand down to the afternoon, and were later adjourned to Thursday next on account of the absence of some of the witnesses! Inspector Hondrey explained that one of the men in the crowd was at present suffering from injuries received. It was alleged that ho had been kicked by Brown. ' Mr. H. F. O'Loary, who appeared for Brown, askod for bail. This was rofused. THE ALLEGED INTERNATIONAL ' ' PICKPOCKET. The alleged international pickpocket, Arthur Williams, appeared on remand charged with the theft of :Gls ■ from Robert Lacey at Moonce Ponds railway, station. Chiof-Detectivo Boddam explained that the police had' been cabled to at Melbourne, and had replied to tho oifcct that an escort had left there last Friday for Wellington. A remand was accordingly granted to Thursday. SERIOUS CHARGE DISMISSED. Ernest Ivor Nilsson was charged with a serious olfenco in respect to a girl aged 5} years. Ho was defended by Mr. T. M. Clark was remanded to February 16 on a charge of using obscene language. Florence Emeny was seut to gaol for two months on a charge of drunkenness, and fined 205., in default three days imprisonment, for committing a breach of her prohibition order. David Wm. Bowo was fined 10s., in defanlt 48 hours' imprisonment, for drunkonness. Thomas MaUricy admitted a large mtmbor of previous convictions against bis name for. drunkenness, and readily admitted an additional charge in this respect. He was sent to gaol for two months, and made ihe subject of a prohibition order. James Kennedy, for whom Mr. W. Perry appeared, was fined 205., in dofault three days' imprisonment, on a charge of assisting Elizabeth Brady (prohibited) to drink liquor. _ A similar penalty was imposed on Lenora Parker, chargod with commit" ting a breach of her prohibition order. Graham Burns Douglas was fined 55., with costs 75., on a charge of being found in the Cricketers' Arms Hotel , during prohibited hours. Twelve first-offending inebriate#-were dealt with., MAINTENANCE OASES. The following tvot© penalised as mentioned on charges of disobeying maintenance ■ orders: —Konneth Blackbee, sentenced to ten days' imprisonment, warrant to be suspended on payment of 2s. 6d- weekly; Thomas M'Glarry, twolve days' gaol unless arrears, £1, aro paid forthwith; Wm. Hawley, ton days' imprisonment or the payment of 10s. weekly; James Albert Whisker, three days, or the payment of 6s. weekly; Reos Watkins, order made remitting £7 16s. off arrears, solicitor's fee £1 Is. being allowed. Bert Wiig was ordered to pay 7b. 6d. per week towards the maintenance of his illegitimate child, also to pay incidental oosts, £6 6s.
