MAGISTRATE'SCOURT; ALLEGED GAMBLING- DEN, Resulteut upon a police -raid on an alleged gaming house at, No. 24 Abol Smith Street at midnight on Friday, five mon appeared boforo Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.AI., in the Magistrate's Court on Saturday. Frederick Burridge Mann was charged with being the occupier of premises at 24 Abol Smith Btroot, and using the same as a common gaming house; Albert Benjamin Lucas, Robert Henderson, Sidney Palm jr, and Michael Keane were each charged with being, found in a common gaming house. On the application of Mr. P. W. Jackson, Mann, was remanded until Friday next, bail being allowed in the Bum of £50. The four others alleged to have been found on the premise; were also remanded on Mr. lafkson's application.

CHARGE DISMISSED-"WITH REGRET." I 'Albert Harris pleaded guilty to a I chaTge of drunkenness, and not guilty to a charge of using obscene language. He was defended by Mr. P. W. Jackson. On the charge of drunkenness he was convicted and discharged, and ordered to pay witness's expenses, 4b. George W._ Jackson, a man of . 70 years, with six previous convictions for drunkenness within the past six months, was sent to gaol for two months. Accused agreed to a prohibition ordor being taken out against him. Mary Brown, charged with drunkenness, was remanded for a week for medical treatement. Inspector Hetdrey explained that when arrested accused wa_s in a deplorable condition. She had had to have four stitches put in her nose and was suffering from the effects of drink and general ill-treatment. • For drunkenness, Andrew John Davidson was fined £1, or three days' gaol: Charles Coyle, Robert Costello, and John Stewart were each fined 10s., or 48 hours; John Pryse, an old offender for drunkenness, was sent to gaol for three months, and' fined £1, with costs 75., in default three days, on: each of four charges of breaking his prohibition order; three first offenders wore dealt with.
